Welfare. The WeMi network has been strengthened, at least sixteen spaces in 2020

The Administration plans to make 5 more available than last year. Rabaiotti: “Strengthen a system that has involved around 2017 thousand people since 20”

Milan, January 26 2020 - Consolidate the network of social centers in the area, promote access to welfare services to an ever-increasing number of people, improve the integration of public and private offerings and promote the sharing of services in a community welfare perspective.
This is the objective of the Administration which has decided to renew the experimentation relating to WeMi spaces, the system of physical places for accessing citizens' home services. The intention is to strengthen the network of spaces, going from 2020 to at least 11 facilities in the area during 16, guaranteeing at least one per municipality, and to continue the collaboration with the Third Sector for the co-management of these spaces.
This will be done with a co-planning procedure open to interested associations, within which a maximum of 80 points will be awarded for the quality of the project and a maximum of 20 points for the economic offer that must be provided by the winning entities, which they will stipulate an agreement with the Administration, a co-financing of no less than 10% of the total value of the project.
The experimentation will last 10 months, starting from March 2020. The resources invested in the project amount to 649 thousand euros.

According to what emerges from the data collected and analyzed for the 2018-2020 Welfare plan, the over 65s in Milan represent 24,4% of the population. Of these, 3,5% are over 85 years old. Minors in the city, on the other hand, are 16,9% and are destined to fall to 13,6% in 2030 given the substantial stability in the share of elderly residents. Today, there are around 65 thousand non-self-sufficient people over 50, equal to 15% of the population and, of these, only 25% are in the care of social services. The rest relies on the family network or turns to the informal care market (estimates say that between 32 thousand and 40 thousand carers work in Milan, on a regular or non-regular basis). If we consider that more than 50% of the population is made up of single people or single-parent families, the need emerges for social policies that are able to engage and provide responses not only to the weakest segments of the population, but also to the middle segments, considering that loneliness and the weakening of relationships between people require an increasingly active welfare system.

“The WeMi system - declares the councilor for social and housing policies Gabriele Rabaiotti - was created to create an innovative integration of public and private welfare services, offering citizens local facilities where they can find information and be guided in the activation process of performance. We want to strengthen a network that since 2017 has welcomed and involved around 20 thousand people in its activities".
