Welfare. Food aid, two spaces announced for the distribution of food and meals to those in need

Scavuzzo and Rabaiotti: “Right now we need to strengthen the Food Policy project. An area that has not been used for some time will be recovered in via Aldini"

Milan, August 3 2021 - Sustainable development and fight against food poverty, with a view to strengthening public and private social responses to the weakest groups of citizens: these are the objectives of the resolution to tender the management of two spaces owned by the municipality, one in via Aldini 72 and the other in viale Monza 335.

For the latter, which has a surface area of approximately 330 square metres, this is a reconfirmation of intended use: already in 2009, in fact, a concession contract had been stipulated with the Fondazione Pane Quotidiano Onlus, created specifically to manage the surpluses of the food system and distribute basic necessities to the poorest sections of the population. The contract has now reached its natural expiry, and the Administration confirms its interest in maintaining the presence of food aid and social subsidiarity activities in the neighborhood by committing the next manager to a renovation of the building and a redevelopment of the external areas .

The property in via Aldini, which has a surface area of approximately 750 square meters and is located within a garden of a section used as a reception center for homeless people, has instead been unused for years, and due to its shape it is particularly suitable to host a solidarity canteen - therefore with preparation and distribution of hot meals - which is currently absent in that quadrant of the city, the north-west area where there are neighborhoods with a high concentration of vulnerable people, such as Quarto-Oggiaro, Villapizzone, Gallaratese . Also in this case, interventions are required to adapt and arrange the space, a former gym.

In Milan there are 11 solidarity canteens on a north-east/south-west axis, managed by 9 religious and third sector organisations, which provide around 8.500 meals a day. Based on its surface area, the space in via Aldini could accommodate around 150/180 seats.

“In a moment like the one we are experiencing, in which the number of people who need food aid is growing, it seems coherent and correct to implement projects like these - say the deputy mayor Anna Scavuzzo and the councilor for social policies and housing Gabriele Rabaiotti -. And if for one case, viale Monza, we wanted to confirm an already consolidated use by asking the future manager to solve the problem of the local impacts connected to this type of food distribution service, for via Aldini there is an additional reason for satisfaction: recover and return to the city a space that has not been exploited for years, a 'void' that will finally be able to become 'full' again, rearranged and ready to be lived in, at the service of the needs of the Milanese".

The public notice to be published soon will be aimed at non-profit associations, non-profit organisations, social cooperatives, foundations with social, cultural and educational purposes, both individually and as a temporary group aimed at implementing the project. The presentation of the assignment request by associations not yet formally constituted will be permitted, subject to the signing of the commitment, in the event of assignment, to complete the articles of association.

Both properties will be assigned under the concession of use regime for 9 years, also to better guarantee the possibility of amortization of the investment useful for strengthening the activities. As for the rent, calculated on the basis of market values and reduced by 70% since these are non-profit entities, the starting price will be 7.968 euros for the property in viale Monza and 7.938 euros for the property in via Aldini.
