Via Quarti. The colorful street as children want it

Via Quarti. The colorful street as children want it

The second phase will start in November with the insertion of plants and street furniture. Lipparini and Maran: “We want to give life back to this neighborhood starting from the inhabitants who defend it and take care of it. The Municipality will be present alongside them with cleaning interventions, urban regeneration and restoration of legality"

Milan, October 16 2020 – Yellow, blue and white. In different and symmetrical shapes, with rhombuses, circles and stripes that design paths of play and imagination. Via Quarti starts again from the wishes of the children to change its face, from a closed-end street, overlooking seven public housing towers, where 450 families live, to a park street, with trees, benches and other installations, the entrance door to the large green area of the Quarry Park.

This afternoon the councilors for Participation and Active Citizenship, Lorenzo Lipparini and for Urban Planning, Piefrancesco Maran, went to via Quarti to meet the citizens and share the first result of a concrete and happy collaboration between institutions, associations and citizens. As in other areas of the city, the winning formula in via Quarti is the combination of two actions: a redevelopment project that lives thanks to a Collaboration Pact between the Municipality and citizens. The creator of the project was the Polytechnic of Milan which, present in the neighborhood with its students, listened to the citizens, collected the proposals and gave life to the intervention.

“For us, Via Quarti is a challenge among challenges - said councilors Lipparini and Maran -. It is an urban regeneration project born from a collaboration agreement between the Municipality, associations, the Milan Polytechnic and citizens of the neighborhood. Many of them, every day, are committed to the care and cleaning of places and common spaces often damaged by acts of vandalism and crime. Today we returned here to reiterate our desire to be present and accompany this project, making it even more incisive. The new Via Quarti will be the first step towards a broader renewal of the neighborhood in the name of legality and in continuity with the redevelopment of the Quarry Park".

The Park in via Quarti "Quarti park" is a project born from the meeting between the network of subjects operating in the public housing district of Quarti, its inhabitants, the West road project research group of the Polytechnic of Milan, DASTU and Our Italy. It was created with the contribution and patronage of the Municipality of Milan and Municipality 7, with the support of Italia Nostra (supply and installation of tree species), Vestre AS (supply of furnishings), Shareradio and Municipality. It is an urban regeneration project that is part of a long network path started in Municipality 7 and in the Quarti district. It is proposed to experiment with new uses between the neighborhood and the Quarry Park starting from a physical change that characterizes the road surface, a "space for everyone" and a new gateway to the park.

The project was born from a participatory workshop held in the neighborhood from October to December 2018 and involved the inhabitants, associations and the West road project research group. The outcomes of the workshop were collected by "Patti chiaro - from the collaboration agreement to the regeneration of Quarti", a project financed by the 2019 Neighborhoods Notice of the Municipality of Milan. The pact aims to accompany the local community in a process of taking charge and caring for the common space that is slowly emerging, thanks to the social cohesion paths practiced over the years by the proponents.
