Via Padova. Greater liveability and safety, the neighborhood redevelopment project presented

Milan, 10 April 2021 – The project for the redevelopment of via Padova was presented during an online meeting by the councilors for Mobility and Public Works Marco Granelli and for Participation Lorenzo Lipparini with the technicians of the Municipality, AMAT and MM. Also present were Francesco Lupic of All about lab, proponent of the participatory project and Elisabetta Bianchessi of Tunnel Boulevard for the regeneration of the tunnel area.

The project involves about two kilometers of via Padova, equal to half of the road, between via Arici (Crescencego) and via Giacosa, and is grafted onto the next, already redeveloped stretch that reaches piazzale Loreto. The works will be carried out in various phases starting from 19 April and ending by June 2022. The first construction site will be the one for the construction of the parking lot adjacent to the intersection between via Padova and via Anacreonte and will be completed at the end of August.

An integral part of the project is the Boulevard Tunnel, selected thanks to the Open Squares tender, which will be built with a collaboration agreement and the support of the Cariplo Foundation and will serve to redevelop the railway bridge, on which the writing "Viapadovanondo" will appear. In particular, the pedestrian passages will be transformed into a "public art gallery" in which various street artists will perform cyclically, while the sidewalks will be widened to facilitate the passage of pedestrians.

"The Via Padova project – declares Marco Granelli councilor for Mobility and Public Works – reflects the way in which we think about city mobility. A road that crosses the neighborhoods and connects them and not that divides them. A project that responds to the need for greater road safety and gives the possibility of having a more usable and beautiful urban public space with squares, meeting places and greenery for the people and the numerous associations that enhance it and for the commercial and entrepreneurial activities present".

"This is a large-scale intervention that improves the street and the surrounding neighborhoods which are establishing themselves as a laboratory of urban transformation and redevelopment thanks to the many interventions developed in recent years – declares the municipal councilor for Participation Lorenzo Lipparini –. But the start of the construction site is also important for us because of how the project was born and developed which has the active citizens of the neighborhood as protagonists through the Participatory Budget. This is one of the projects most voted for by the citizens, an active part of the change together with the Administration".

The objective is to improve the liveability of the neighborhood's public spaces through greater road safety and encouraging sustainable mobility. Speed will be moderate to encourage the presence of motor vehicles and bicycles; pedestrian crossings will increase, which will be protected, facilitated with wider and in some cases raised passages. Overall, there will be 22 redeveloped intersections and 35 raised pedestrian crossings.

Via Padova will thus be inserted into a large zone 30 which goes from Piazzale Loreto to the Adriano and Crescenzago districts to the north, and will maintain the passage of the ATM with bus 56 throughout the route. The redevelopment is characterized by the expansion and renovation sidewalks with granite cubes, to improve the shop fronts, and the creation of eight new neighborhood squares, thanks to the expansion of pedestrian spaces at some intersections.

230 trees will be planted (Greek strawberry tree, ginkgo biloba and magnolias), partly inside large containers, where installation in the ground is not possible due to the presence of underground services. Also planned are flowerbeds with seats and plants in the ground which will improve the aesthetic quality and liveability, also counteracting heat islands and increasing the absorption of rainwater.

The area of via Padova near the intersection with via Anacreonte will become a tree-lined car park, while the area in front of the parish church of San Giovanni Crisostomo will be made more usable and redeveloped with more trees.

Via Esterle and via Cambini have also been improved with the introduction of one-way traffic in via Esterle towards via Padova and in via Cambini towards Palmanova, thus allowing a significant increase in regular vehicle parking for residents and ATM workers on shifts nocturnal.

The connection between via Esterle, Cambini, Petraccone with viale Palmanova will be modified, increasing the green surface and the unpaved areas adjacent to the shared vegetable gardens managed by Legambiente, thus decreasing the surface covered with asphalt.

Further north, the intersection with Via Prinetti will be redeveloped, creating an expansion of the pedestrian area in front of the Caravaggio state art high school frequented by hundreds of students to offer greater road safety when crossing and a larger entrance and exit area. school building.
