Milan, February 23 2022 – The building of the former "Luciano Manara" elementary school in via Fratelli Zoia in Quarto Cagnino was cleared of illegal occupants. At the time of the intervention, which took place this morning, six people were present, all adults: numerous makeshift beds were found in the rooms once used as classrooms.

The eviction is currently being followed by safety, cleaning and landscaping works. Some interventions will also be carried out to make the area immediately and temporarily usable so that it is compatible with a temporary assignment to associations, pending the definitive solution.
The cleaning and initial safety works will last a couple of months.

To carry out this coordinated system of interventions, in recent weeks the municipal departments and departments of Welfare, Security, Green, Neighborhoods and Municipality 7 have examined the situation and planned a process to take charge of the building, which began today with this first action. Today in via Fratelli Zoia the local police were also present - who will undertake a control activity in the next few nights to avoid new occupations -, Nuir and Amsa who started the cleaning.

The objective is to use the spaces for community welfare activities or as a location for socio-educational and training services and support for fragile families, functional to the expansion of the offer in the area. For this reason, a process will be started aimed at identifying a manager for the former school. The over 2.800 square meters of surface area on via Fratelli Zoia are under the direct protection of the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape which has issued the authorization for the use of the property for educational, socio-cultural, recreational or sporting purposes.

"Today's intervention – declare the councilors Marco Granelli (Safety) and Lamberto Bertolé (Welfare) – is part of a redevelopment and reuse project of the former Manara school which we want to save from abandonment and neglect and make available of the neighborhood and the city so that it becomes a place of sociality and meeting. A space where citizens can find local welfare services, preserving the social vocation that the building has always had and the indications of the Superintendency regarding its intended use" .
