Milan, 27 April 2021 – A new square redeveloped and returned to citizens that is greener, more beautiful and more inclusive. The redevelopment works of Piazza Schiavone, in Bovisa, have been completed.

"Milan returns to living outdoors and has an increasingly greater need for quality public spaces - declares the councilor for urban planning Pierfrancesco Maran -. The strategy of valorising the squares is part of the vision of the city at 15 minutes, in which each neighborhood can count on places for socializing and meeting, green and accessible for all. A short distance from Piazza Schiavone we also intervened in Piazza Bausan, with the renewal of vegetation, lighting and pedestrian passages, and we are permanently redeveloping Piazza Dergano, after the experimentation in the context of Open Squares".

The intervention saw the reconfiguration of the spaces through the demolition of the existing staircases and walls. The flowerbeds have been expanded, bringing the green surface from 983 m2 to 1.525 m2, and the 24 existing trees were safeguarded, with the safety of the root system of a paulownia that was raising a portion of the pavement. In the part of the square previously devoid of vegetation, 16 new tall trees have been planted which will guarantee an increase in shaded and usable areas, counteracting the heat island. A new flooring with high draining power was also created, with the creation of pedestrian paths in connection with the green area. Finally, the area dedicated to children was redeveloped and expanded with the addition of a new inclusive game, swings and spring games.

In the next few days the green areas will remain fenced to allow the growth and rooting of the newly sown turf, while the square, the fountain and the renovated play area are accessible from today.
