Green. Over 20 thousand trees arriving in Milan, goal of 100 thousand in the Metropolitan City. From November 20th to 25th plantings in every neighborhood

For the first time, there are more than 20.000 trees in the city, including interventions in public housing. And on 21/22 November at Triennale Milano the World Forum on Urban Forests - Milano Calling 2019

Milan, November 15 2019 – Over 20 thousand new trees arriving in Milan, target of 100 thousand by March in the municipalities of the Metropolitan City: with the start of the 2019/2020 agronomic season, the urban forestation project promoted by the Municipality of Milan and the Polytechnic of Milan comes to life and by 2030 aims to bring 3 million new specimens to the metropolitan area. A theme that will be at the center of the World Forum on Urban Forests - Milano Calling 2019 promoted by Triennale Milano on 21 and 21 November.

Milan, plantings have more than doubled in three years

In Milan there are 20.433 trees that will arrive on streets, rows, parks, squares, for the first time also public housing, compared to an estimate of children born in 2019 which amounts to 9.000 (there were 7.637 on 13 November). A clear change of pace compared to previous years: in 2018 16.062 trees were planted, in 2017 14.891 trees while in 2016 there were 9.200 (+ 122% interventions in three years).

The over 20.000 new trees (including those replacing all the trees cut down because they were sick or fell due to bad weather), together with over 13.300 shrubs, will enrich the heritage of 480.757 specimens in the city, of which 242.638 are managed directly by the Municipality through the Global Service of MIAMI scarl.

“For the first time we exceed 20 thousand trees planted in the city in a year – declares the councilor for Urban and Green Planning Pierfrancesco Maran –. Between now and 2030, 20 new parks will be created, which means 20 new tree-lined areas, in the cases of Farini and Piazza d'Armi as large as Parco Sempione, in as many neighborhoods of Milan. We will also see the creation of the Great Metropolitan Park along the perimeter of the city through the connection between the North Park and the South Park. These are medium-term objectives, which today we support with specific and widespread interventions, where possible by depaving and bringing greenery to asphalted areas such as in Piazza Sant'Agostino. Milan's effort, which in just three years has more than doubled the number of trees planted, must be in synergy with those of all the municipalities of the Metropolitan City, so that the objective of 3 million new trees can be achieved, at benefit of all citizens."

Trees in every neighborhood. From 20 to 25 November, over a thousand trees will be planted, including the courtyards of public housing and schools

Six days of planting spread across the city, from 20 to 25 November, officially inaugurate the 19/20 agronomic season, involving citizens, students, associations and private companies and bringing over a thousand new specimens.

One of the novelties this year concerns the placing of trees in some courtyards of public housing, with the collaboration of MM. Together with Bloomberg Associates, the philanthropic consultancy service founded by Michael R. Bloomberg to help cities improve the quality of life of their citizens, the Municipality of Milan has identified the hottest areas of the city and plans to increase greenery in courtyards of public housing in these areas. On November 20, 10 trees and 158 shrubs will arrive in the courtyard of the houses in via Vergiate and 6 trees and 60 shrubs in via Visconti, the first pilot sites of the project. Along with the actual planting, interventions are also planned to enhance the common spaces of the blocks, with the repaving of some surfaces, the arrival of new seats and benches, and the creation of two new play areas for children, one for each complex. The redevelopment of the courtyards will be inaugurated in the presence of the councilor for social and housing policies Gabriele Rabaiotti and the works will continue throughout the month of December.

“These are two pilot projects – explains Rabaiotti – with the prospect of extending this activity of valorisation and redevelopment of the common spaces of our public housing as much as possible. With this objective, we have already asked MM that the green maintenance contract can also include new plantings and urban furniture planning".

New trees will also make the schoolyards greener: in the Rubattino Nursery, in via Caduti in mission of peace, with the Municipality 3, 5 specimens will be planted with the involvement of the children, while in the Memmi nursery in via Simone Martini, in the presence of Education Councilor Laura Galimberti, a plum tree will be planted.

Also arriving, thanks to the collaboration with the Zack Goodman communications agency with the SeMiniAmo project, are the first 20 of the 87 trees that will change the face of Piazza Sant'Agostino as part of the major restyling project underway, and 22 specimens in via Giambellino at the height of via Brunelleschi. Also in via Giambellino, between via Tirana and via Gelsomini, 6 examples will enrich the parterre currently being redeveloped.

Various interventions have been promoted together with private operators in the context of urbanization works and cost deductions: Euromilano will plant 30 trees in the Verga park, the green lung of Quarto Oggiaro built in 2013 on a former abandoned industrial area, while in Merezzate, the under construction near Rogoredo, Investire sgr will place the first 75 of the 312 trees planned. Over 30 trees are arriving between via Niccolini, via Bramante and via Ceresio, as part of the intervention by Porta Volta S.r.l, for the new headquarters of the Association for industrial design which will bring a green square for public use. There are 26 plants that City Life will also place on the flowerbeds between via Domodossola, Duilio, Gattamelata and Carlo Magno, 23 will arrive in via Schievano by Land srl while in via Rizzoli, along the cycle path, ProgInvest srl will plant 29.

It's still. The tree-lined areas will be inaugurated on November 25th with 30 specimens between the new Bocconi University Campus and in Piazza Sraffa, while 130 trees are arriving at Cassinis Park, thanks to the fundamental work of Italia Nostra to regenerate the Porto di Sea; the association will also plant 100 trees in Boscoincittà and one in Piazzale Corvetto. The 50 plants donated by the organization of the latest edition of CalcioCity will find their home in via Argelati while the La Bottega association, with the collaboration of Municipality 5, will plant a tree in via De Sanctis. As part of the ReLambro 2 project led by Ersaf, 50 shrubs will arrive along the lake in via Feltre. Two hundred trees in the North Park.

MIAMI scarl, on behalf of the Municipality of Milan, will plant around 280 specimens in these six days: on the occasion of the World Forum on Urban Forests - Milano Calling 2019 promoted by Triennale Milano, four plants will arrive in Viale Alemagna, while the remaining will be made greener the park of Villa Finzi, via Viterbo-Bentivoglio, the Galli park, the Vettabbia park, via Civitavecchia and via Lampugnano, with the involvement of Municipality 8.

In recent weeks, Myplant & Garden, Triumph Group International and Gucci have also planted a few hundred trees in the North Park, while Mellin planted the first specimens in the green area in front of the San Paolo Hospital.

Urban Forestry in the Metropolitan City, the first numbers

In 2018, when the ForestaMi project started, 85.000 trees were planted by the Metropolitan City Municipalities, with their parks, associations, local authorities, and the help of citizens. Wetlands, forests of fountains or environmental compensation are some of the interventions carried out, which actively work to improve the quality of the landscape and the quality of the air in the Metropolitan City.

The same work was carried out in 2019, where together with the municipalities that took action to start a collaboration with ForestaMi, we continued to quantify the number of trees that will be planted between now and March 2020. To date, between the Municipality of Milan and the Metropolitan City Municipalities, the estimate is 71.648 plants, which in March 2020 will become 100.000.

“A tree for every metropolitan inhabitant by 2030 is not only an ambitious goal – declares the deputy mayor of the Metropolitan City Arianna Censi – but also a way to give us and our children a better future. Moreover, encouraging the development of a metropolitan green network as a strategic territorial infrastructure has always been one of the key assets of the strategic plan of the metropolitan city".

At the Triennale the World Forum on Urban Forests - Milano Calling 2019 and ForestaMi

Triennale Milano continues its reflection on sustainability issues by promoting the World Forum on Urban Forests - Milano Calling 2019 which will address the fundamental issues relating to the implementation of urban forestry to stimulate the exchange and sharing of knowledge between cities, academic institutions , international organizations and professionals in the sector. Within the Forum, ForestaMI will be presented, the large urban forestation project that the Metropolitan City of Milan has decided to implement in order to increase the level of naturalness of the city and its urban quality, but also in order to increase the resilience of the territory urban environment to environmental stress and the effects of global warming.

“With the World Forum on Urban Forests - Milano Calling 2019 Triennale confirms its commitment to addressing contemporary issues and urgencies. The Forum places itself on a line of continuity with the XXII International Broken Nature Exhibition and brings Triennale back to the center of the debate on environmental policies - declares Stefano Boeri, President of Triennale Milano -. Urban forestation is today at the top of the agendas of the planet's large metropolises. One of the main objectives of the Forum in Triennale is to propose possible models for the development of a new concept of city, in which the presence of forests, both urban and peri-urban, is fundamental to guarantee a sustainable future. The forests are not the past or the other of the city but their future."
