Green. Municipality and Polytechnic of Milan together to promote training and research on climate change and sustainable development

Until August 5th it is possible to submit your application to participate in the awarding of the scholarship at the Polytechnic of Milan

Milan, July 19 2022 – The Municipality and the Polytechnic of Milan continue their collaboration in the name of training and research of young doctoral students on the topics of energy efficiency, resource optimization and greenery for an increasingly sustainable development of the city.

You have time until 15pm on August 5th to submit your application for a scholarship as part of the national research doctorate "Sustainable development and Climate change". The three-year training course aims to prepare future generations to redesign a society capable of tackling and managing the problem of climate change in the best possible way, and to rethink sustainable development processes. In addition to the Polytechnic of Milan, there are 50 universities involved in the training and research program throughout the national territory coordinated by IUSS Pavia.

The objective of the doctorate is to offer students a high-level training path, achieved by coordinating and integrating the skills and excellence of the different disciplinary areas of the university institutes involved. These areas range from ecology to technology, from economics to engineering, from mathematics to philosophy, from medicine to agriculture.

Doctoral students will have the opportunity to address problems related to the implementation and pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out in the United Nations 2030 Agenda.

The Municipality of Milan, thanks to the Environment and Green Management, will allow the doctoral student who chooses to carry out his PhD course at the Department of Energy of the Polytechnic of Milan (IT) to interface with its offices and with those of AMAT (Environment Mobility Agency territory) for the research/application part of the course of study. The doctorate is aimed at developing modeling for the evaluation of urban greenery as a heat island mitigation strategy. Once the effectiveness of the modeling has been validated, the cooling effect of the urban forest on today's climate will be investigated and, in a subsequent step, on the climate expected in future years in the city of Milan.

Overall, the scholarships made available by the national program are 134, out of all the universities involved. Specifically, the single scholarship made available by the Milanese university is co-financed by PNRR/Next generation EU and the Polytechnic of Milan.
