The winning proposal envisages the current configuration for the next three years. Thin out the banana trees to ensure greater visibility

Milan, November 29 2019 – The current configuration of the flower beds in Piazza Duomo will remain unchanged for the next three years. This is the outcome of the sponsorship call promoted by the Administration last August for the creation and care of the flowerbeds located to the west of the square starting from 1 January 2020.

The winning proposal, presented by Starbucks, involves the substantial maintenance of the plants and essences present, which have adapted to the climate and aesthetics of the place. The project has received the approval of the Superintendence.

“After three years we can see how the plants have grown and are in good health – declares the Green Councilor Pierfrancesco Maran -. We thank the sponsor who has guaranteed his care up to now and will continue to do so, giving continuity to a quality intervention."

The project, as in 2017 by the Milanese architect Marco Bay, will bring a slight update to the flowerbeds, necessary to re-establish a certain visual permeability of the spaces. In particular, the banana plantations which, enjoying excellent health, have multiplied over the years, taking up a lot of space in the flowerbeds, will be thinned out, and the Miscanthus sinesis species will be thinned out, which has also become very luxuriant.

The other plant species present remain the protagonists and guarantee colorful blooms - trachycarpus fortunei (palms), musa ensete, hollyhocks, hibiscus, paniculate hydrangeas, ears of miscanthus - with the exception of Bergenia ibryda Bach, replaced in the project with the fern Dryopteris erythrosora , which will offer a greater aesthetic and compositional result in the border of the green stripes bordering the gray part of the ebony black gravel.
