Green. 7,5 million euros for the care of the Cave Park and the Boscoincittà

The Administration allocates resources for the maintenance of the two green lungs in the western area. Maran: "Ensuring quality for the construction of the Great Metropolitan Park"

Milan, November 7 2020 – Almost 1,5 million euros for the maintenance activities of rural areas within the Cave Park for the period between November 2020 and October 2023 and approximately 6 million euros for the management, until 2029, of Boscoincittà and Cava Ongari Cerutti, located within the Cave park.
These are the funds allocated by the council for the management of two of the largest and most characteristic green lungs of the city.

"The care and growth of these two natural oases in the west of the city will be fundamental for the creation of the Great Metropolitan Park - declares the Green Councilor Pierfrancesco Maran -. For this reason we want to continue to ensure high quality standards, as has been the case in these years, entrusting the management to highly specialized individuals in the care of forest areas and the complex quarry water system".

The Cave Park, included within the Southern Agricultural Park, with its extension of over 100 hectares within a densely built context between Baggio, Quinto Romano and Quarto Cagnino, represents one of the most important green resources in the area, element of connection between the former Piazza d'Armi and the system of rural areas of the western city. Its maintenance is mainly divided between Miami Scarl as part of the Global Service of the Municipality regarding the areas with the most intense use, sports, cultural and recreational associations already existing prior to the formation of the park for the areas occupied by its activities, the CFU " Boscoincittà” of Italia Nostra regarding Cava Ongari Cerutti, and some agricultural companies historically present in the area promoting projects of environmental value for agricultural production areas.

Thanks to the care of the farmers, over the years the cultivation of the surfaces within the park has been progressively diversified: large areas previously kept as turf have been transformed into hay fields, flower meadows, wheat and alfalfa, to the benefit of biodiversity and the richness of the original landscape. For this reason, also in the coming years, the current agricultural areas and the new ones that will be created, for a total of 60 hectares, will be entrusted to farmers selected by the Milanese Agricultural District, as has been the case since 2010. Furthermore, important redevelopment works will begin next year of the park for a value of 5 million euros, as part of the Calchi Taeggi Integrated Intervention Plan which will bring new cycle and pedestrian paths, green works, furnishings and public lighting.

At the same time, the Administration has allocated approximately 6 million euros until 2029 for the maintenance and development of the municipal green areas of Cava Ongari-Cerutti, 23 hectares of greenery and bodies of water within the Cave Park, and of Boscoincittà , which with its 128 hectares represents the first example in Italy of urban forestation also recognized at an international level. The two green lungs are now managed by Italia Nostra which not only deals with maintenance aspects, but also with complementary social, educational and training activities and citizen involvement in the development and care of the areas.

The Administration will now have to launch a public investigation aimed at identifying the entity with which to stipulate a new collaboration agreement for the management, maintenance and development of the green areas for the next 9 years. The individual will have to demonstrate that they have technical and organizational skills and produce specific projects that pursue, among other things, the development of the "West Milan Green Belt" with the completion of the connections with the Southern Agricultural Park, the enhancement of naturalness and biodiversity, the development of peri-urban agriculture, the completion of cycle-pedestrian and equestrian paths and the completion and development of urban vegetable gardens and thematic gardens.
