Urban planning. Schools, greenery, sports and public spaces: the works for the city generated by the Citylife project

Green light for new interventions with tax deduction: the renovation of two school buildings, vegetable gardens and a roofing project for the Vigorelli Velodrome. The redevelopment of Piazza VI February is also planned

Milan, May 9 2020 – Important private resources to be allocated to public works of school buildings, sports buildings and greenery. They are generated as part of the agreement between the Municipality and CityLife SpA, the company in charge of the Integrated Intervention Plan which gave rise to the reconversion of the historic urban center of the Fair, today a model of urban transformation and creation of a new centrality.

Following the sale of the Palazzo delle Scintille, the internal redevelopment of which according to the original agreement should have been entirely borne by the operator, the Administration has identified the new interventions that CityLife will have to carry out after deducting costs in place of the intervention on the 'motionless.

Therefore, if on the one hand with the sale - for a value of over 30 million euros - the Municipality has returned an asset to the city through the public functions that will be promoted by the buyer and generated important public resources, on the other it has "freed ” private resources to be allocated to public interventions in Municipality 8.

Furthermore, based on a further agreement, CityLife will carry out the renovation of Piazza VI February, significantly expanding the scope of the intervention already originally planned.

"Milan is preparing to experience a delicate and complex phase, but a characteristic in the city's DNA is the ability to team up between public and private sectors - declares the councilor for Urban Planning Pierfrancesco Maran -. While on the one hand the development of CityLife has created a new lively neighborhood and modified the skyline of Milan with buildings characterized by high architectural quality and environmental sustainability, on the other hand it brought widespread interventions in the neighborhood, starting from the park which today is frequented by all citizens. These new public interventions on the territory will bring new fundamental services at the service of everyone, starting with the redevelopment of schools".

“The safety of schools – underlines the councilor for school buildings Paolo Limonta – has always had a primary role in the administration's choices. But never before has so much attention been paid to the little ones who, with the arrival of the health emergency, have seen classroom lessons suspended and places for socializing limited. These two interventions will have an important positive impact on two large schools in the neighborhood and consequently on its citizens."

"For Municipality 8 it is an immense satisfaction - adds Simone Zambelli, President of Municipality 8 -, thanks to these resources we will finally be able to start work on public works of extraordinary importance for many neighbourhoods, starting from schools and green areas, essential services for citizens"

“The new interventions agreed within the agreement with the Municipality are further confirmation of the fruitful collaboration that has been created between CityLife and the administration in recent years - commented Armando Borghi, CEO of CityLife -. CityLife is strongly committed to contributing to the success of a cutting-edge urban regeneration project which has already returned to the community a completely renovated area which is now accessible to all".

In particular, according to the new agreements, which will have to be subject to an update of the conventional commitments, the operator will provide for the conservative renovation of two school buildings, the Rinnovata Pizzigoni and the Cappellini in via Giovanni Battista Rossi, for a total of 14 million euros, identified among the priority ones in the Public Works Plan. The first involves works to renovate the roof and floors with the creation of thermal insulation, as well as other related works worth 6 million euros. The second involves extraordinary maintenance work on the roof, internal renovation works, adaptation of the systems, renovation of the bathrooms and leak prevention for a total of 8 million euros.
As regards the increase in greenery, as indicated by Municipality 8, new pool gardens will be created in via Pogatschnig, Chiarelli/Donadoni, and Omodeo/Cechov. The operator will also carry out a feasibility project for the coverage of the Vigorelli velodrome, for which it is already responsible for the refunctionalization of the system (of which the first two phases have already been completed).

As regards Piazza VI February, the redevelopment will improve the accessibility and quality of the public space, transforming a disorderly area into a new place of sociality. The central area will become a large free and usable green space: new trees will be planted, benches, seats and tables will be installed, the flooring and the lighting system will be redone. Furthermore, the tracks of the tram line and the areas around the car parks will be grassed and new crossings will be created to improve flows from via Ferrucci and via Monti.

Through the downsizing of the driveway section, a new cycle path will also be created which runs from Viale Cassiodoro around the square, runs along Via Francesco Ferrucci and reconnects to Via Ippolito Nievo.

The works to complete the roadway of Viale Duilio were completed in recent days, an intervention carried out in agreement between CityLife and the Municipality of Milan with the aim of redeveloping the road axis of Viale Duilio and encouraging the expansion of the area intended for cycling and pedestrian mobility.
