Urban planning. Piazza Freud becomes pedestrian: more greenery and public spaces

Maran and Granelli: “Radical change with the rethinking of spaces”. Once the redevelopment project has been improved, a small "urban park" will be created in continuity with the Tree Library

Milan, July 17 2020 – A pedestrian and livable area in continuity with Piazza Gae Aulenti, a green space in connection with the Library of Trees, an orderly and safe gateway to Garibaldi Station, the nerve center of railway traffic in the city.

It is the revolution foreseen for Piazza Freud, whose redevelopment project already foreseen by the Administration has been implemented and improved in order to harmonize it with the design quality of the surrounding environments.

In recent months, the Municipality has worked on the redesign of the square with the Italian Railway Network (FS Italiane Group), responsible for the intervention and owner of the right to use the Garibaldi Station, and with FS Sistemi Urbani (FS Italiane Group), owner of the square. The new configuration involves the creation of a small "urban park" in the center of the square in place of a little-used car park, with the creation of tree-lined flowerbeds, the widening of the sidewalk in front of the station, new cycle-pedestrian paths in waterproof concrete, mirrors of water and the green arrangement of the slight slope that recovers the difference in height between Viale Sturzo and the square itself.

“The face of Piazza Freud, the gateway to one of the main railway stations of the city, will change radically – declares the councilor for Urban and Green Planning Pierfrancesco Maran -. Together with RFI we wanted to make the project more ambitious, consistent with the guidelines of the Territorial Government Plan which include the regeneration of public space, the increase of greenery and the valorisation of mobility hubs".

"The arrangement of Piazza Freud - adds the councilor for Mobility Marco Granelli - is a further step in the redevelopment of this large area of the city between Garibaldi, Porta Nuova and Isola, where the rethinking of spaces to encourage sustainable mobility has had and will continue to play a fundamental role."

To the north of the square, near the entrance to the station, there will remain a "Kiss and ride" area for people and for loading/unloading goods, as well as stations dedicated to car sharing, motorcycles, electric cars and biking sharing and bicycles. Taxi stands will be located both on the left side of the entrance lane and on the opposite side. The square could also host spaces intended for commercial activities with a mix of functions and services for citizens, so as to be not only a point of passage but also a pleasant and safe place to spend free time.

The estimated cost, borne by RFI, is approximately 2 million euros and after the signing of the agreement it is expected to start the works in the first half of 2021 for a duration of approximately six months.
