Urban planning. Magazzini Raccordati, a future dedicated to architecture and design

The proposal presented by Grandi Stazioni Retail for the recovery of the former railway depots was positively evaluated: refunctionalized spaces, redevelopment of via Sammartini and benefits for the neighborhood

Milan, September 28 2021 – On the one hand to create a new district linked to the world of architecture and design in the city, on the other to contribute to the regeneration of the area around the Central Station, at the same time recovering a valuable artefact from the 30s.
With these objectives, the Council assessed the public and general interest relating to the recovery and refunctionalization project of the Magazzini Raccordati presented by Grandi Stazioni Retail, lessee of the spaces owned by the Italian Railway Network.

The project involves the architectural recovery of the former railway depots in via Sammartini through a conservative restoration intervention, in compliance with the protection constraints and the authorization that will be issued by the Superintendency. To complete the offer, Grandi Stazioni Retail, which will create and manage the services, envisages the establishment of services of public interest such as a library, educational-exhibition spaces and laboratories, as well as coworking spaces, catering, tertiary and commercial functions.

The regeneration of the Warehouses, long awaited by citizens and neighborhood associations, will be able to guarantee a direct benefit for the entire area, as happened in Piazza Luigi Di Savoia with the creation of the Garden of girls and boys from all over the world, the widening of the sidewalks and the opening of some commercial activities, in Piazza IV Novembre with the recent arrival of the Central Market, and in Piazza Duca D'Aosta, redeveloped as part of the SeminiAmo project. In addition to the redevelopment of Via Sammartini, the recovery of the Warehouses will attract numerous professionals and students to the Central area who will guarantee a new social presence and generate an important impact for all the surrounding areas, contributing to their revaluation.
