Urban planning. Former Mameli Barracks, the future is a large urban park with social housing and services

Maran: "Important intervention that will bring one of the 20 new parks planned by 2030". The implementation plan for the regeneration of the area between viale Suzzani and via Gregorovius has been adopted

Milan, 27 December 2020 – A large urban park connected to the neighboring neighborhoods, new apartments at affordable rents, commercial activities and aggregation services for citizens. It is the future of the area of the former Mameli barracks complex, according to the Implementation Plan approved by the Administration.

The former barracks complex extends over an area of approximately 107.000 square meters between viale Giovanni Suzzani, via Gerolamo Arganini and via Ferdinando Gregorovius and is owned by the Investment Fund for valorisation - Extra compartment - Reserved alternative real estate mutual investment fund . On behalf of the Fund, last June Cassa Depositi e Prestiti Investimenti SGR presented the definitive proposal for the transformation of the complex.

“An important and long-awaited piece of news – comments Urban Planning Councilor Pierfrancesco Maran -. This is an urban regeneration intervention that will remove a large abandoned area from degradation following the cessation of military use. One of the 20 new public parks planned by 2030 will be created here."

In fact, 50% of the area will be sold to the Administration for the construction of a large park of at least 50 thousand square metres, squares and public spaces. Out of a maximum building area of 71 thousand square metres, 35.522 (approximately 550 dwellings) will be allocated to social residential construction, of which 21.300 square meters (330 dwellings) will be rented at subsidized rents, and the remainder for free residence, commercial activities (an average sales structure) and offices.

The concentration of volumes along the north and west sides of the intervention area will allow the development of the park in the central area, thus guaranteeing a connection with the surrounding urban fabric.

The Plan provides for urbanization costs of approximately 11 million euros. In addition to the creation of the park, these resources will be allocated to the functional recovery of three buildings of the former barracks in via Gregorovius, which will be used for training, recreational and aggregation activities for citizens entrusted through a public tender procedure. The reuse project of the historic Barracks is part of the PGT's strategy to create new centralities of public and social interest in the city's neighborhoods, and is the result of a participatory process with the citizens. Other resources will also be allocated to road works and the creation of tree-lined car parks along the road in accordance with the provisions of the PGT.
