Tourism. Sport and sustainability, Municipality and UNWTO together to promote the city

Signed by Mayor Sala and the Secretary General of the specialized United Nations agency on Tourism Pololikashvili a letter of intent to encourage sustainable sports tourism

Milan, July 3 2020 - Increasingly sporty and sustainable. This is how tourism in Milan will have to be in the coming years. This was stated by Mayor Giuseppe Sala and the Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the specialized agency of the United Nations, Zurab Pololikashvili, who met on Friday 3 July in Palazzo Marino.
 
Italy is the first country to which the UNWTO Secretary General has paid an official visit after the Covid-19 lockdown period.
“I am truly honored by Secretary Pololikashvili's visit - commented Mayor Sala -: it testifies to the international interest and the strategic role that Milan has played and will continue to play on a global level in tourism. Placing sport and sustainability at the center of the new development strategies of the tourism sector is synonymous with great foresight on the part of the World Tourism Organization. I am sure that Milan will be able to act as an interpreter and concrete and innovative point of reference for a new way of experiencing and experiencing tourism".
 
At the center of Friday's event, in the presence of the Councilor for Sport and Tourism Roberta Guaineri, is the shared interest in growing the city's tourism sector, focusing on some specific areas, such as sport and environmental and social sustainability, even in view of the second edition of the UNWTO Sports Tourism Startup Competition, the startup competition for sports tourism promoted by the World Tourism Organization.
 
“Milan - declared UNWTO Secretary General Pololikashvili - can offer an innovative and resilient response in the tourism sector, it is a city capable of facing new challenges. I am sure that, despite the adversities caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, we will have the opportunity to create a new way of doing tourism, which is more sustainable and socially responsible and respectful".

At the end of the meeting, Mayor Sala and General Secretary Pololikashvili signed a letter of intent which outlines the areas in which the Municipality of Milan and the UNWTO will collaborate to relaunch tourism from an economic and social point of view, in compliance with environment and local culture, through the sharing of data and good practices related to the sector.
