Public transport. Under 14s, free travel cards become electronic

The validity of tickets from the old fare system has been extended until November 30th

Milan, October 8 2019 - There are 25.775 young people under the age of 14 who have been using the card daily since last July 15th to travel for free on the entire public transport network in the Milan area, with great savings for families. Precisely following this success, the Basin Local Public Transport Agency, in agreement with the Municipality of Milan and ATM, has decided to further simplify the travel arrangements for under 14s and also give them the electronic card instead of the 'visible' card.
The decision has recently been made to extend to November 30th (instead of October 12th) the possibility of continuing to use travel tickets prior to the reform of the fare system launched by the Basin Agency for Public Transport and which came into force last year. 15th of July.

“We have implemented a tariff reform which, with free admission for under 14s, has allowed families to save over five million euros – declared Marco Granelli, Councilor for Mobility –. With the new electronic card for those aged between 11 and 14, we are further improving the service by making passage through all the increasingly automated turnstiles easier."

Since yesterday, ATM has begun issuing new Under 14 cards equipped with microchips, exactly like those of adults, and their use will no longer be visible. In fact, thanks to the chip, girls and boys will be able to enter and exit the subway more easily using the turnstiles, without the obligation to show documents or the current card to station staff and without the need to use the intercom on the M5 line.

The boys and girls who currently have an Under 14 card will receive the new electronic card directly at the address indicated at the time of the request by next spring. For those traveling on the M5 today with an Under 14 card, ATM staff will provide information on the new electronic card and how to use it in the next few days. Anyone who makes a new request (as early as 7 October 2019) will instead receive a temporary electronic card (the traditional Itinero card), which can already be used to access the turnstiles; this will be followed by the sending of the final personalized card with the "Under 14" graphics.

Following the reform of the fare system in the Milan area - Stibm - which came into force last July, up to 14 years of age can travel for free on the public transport network even with just an identity document. In addition, and optionally, the parent can request two types of membership cards on the ATM website: the first, valid up to 11 years of age, must be printed directly by the applicants. The second card, electronic as of yesterday, valid for girls and boys from 11 years old up to their 14th birthday (including those who are 10 years old as long as they turn 11 within the current school year) is sent directly to their home without any cost. The request for the two Under 11 and Under 14 cards must be made exclusively through thereserved area of the ATM website by a parent or guardian. The card cannot be requested either at ATM Points or at retail outlets. On the ATM website you can find all the necessary information and how to register and request.

To allow the use of travel tickets still in the possession of public transport passengers, including the 1,50 euro ticket, and simplify the transition towards the new system, the Basin Agency for Local Public Transport, agrees with the Municipality of Milan, has decided to extend the validity of travel documents prior to the reform of the tariff system (Sitam tickets) until November 30th, instead of October 12th.
