Public transport. Taxi, improved service thanks to double guides

Milan, October 16 2019 - More taxis in Milan thanks to the possibility for operators to activate family collaborations. To cope with the increase in demand for cars in public service, the municipal administration will allow the service activity shifts to be integrated with a second driver.

The new authorizations will initially be limited to family members up to the third degree and to the spouse of the license holder and guarantee the extension of the overall taxi service hours from 12 to 16 hours per day.

The issuing of new authorizations to the second driver is one of the actions implemented by the Municipality to resolve the imbalance between supply and demand for taxis which creates inconvenience for users of the service and encourages illegal construction. The main moments of the lack of offer are revealed by the unanswered calls: on Saturdays and Sundays, in the time slot from midnight to 5am the unanswered calls are 42%, in the 19-21pm slot 31%; on weekdays, in the 19-21pm range the backlog is 27% and in the 8-10am range it is 15%.

In recent weeks the council had also approved the activation of the taxi transport service to the hospital for people who need to undergo dialysis. The service is created in collaboration with Areu.

"In recent years the number of users of the taxi service has increased - declares Marco Granelli, Councilor for Mobility -. Our priority is to strengthen it so that it increasingly meets efficiency criteria. For this reason we are implementing various measures that we have presented and partly agreed upon with the categories of operators. With double driving we allow the same taxi to do more hours of service but also to give more work to more people from the same family unit. We will continue in this way with the other measures: double driving also for strangers to the family group, shift control, taxi sharing and increase in licenses. I hope that taxi drivers will help us strengthen the service and the Region will soon authorize sharing and new licenses: Milan cannot wait. More public transport to reduce congestion and pollution".
