Public transport. There are 10 thousand priority seats on the Milanese network

The seats on the surface lines are increasingly highlighted by colour, today on 281 buses

Milan, June 1 2019 - To give more visibility to priority seats on Milan's public transport lines, the Administration has been implementing a plan with ATM for some time to replace seats which are chosen with a contrasting color compared to all the others, yellow or blue. The choice also responds to a request that emerged from an agenda presented by the city councilors Alessandro Giungi and Angelica Vasile approved unanimously by the city council.

These are the seats reserved for people with disabilities, elderly people, pregnant women and small children who since 2013 have been identified with blue stickers/pictograms and the relevant icon but which are now made even more evident to underline their priority function. On the surface lines there are four for each vehicle and in the subway there are always four for each train carriage for a total of over 10 thousand priority seats.

Currently the entire Milanese public transport network has priority seats highlighted by a pictogram and/or with seats differing in padding or color which are located near the doors. Furthermore, 281 recently acquired buses are already in service with seats of different colours, yellow or blue, and easily identifiable. Another 99 are expected between June 2019 and the end of 2020, of which 29 are hybrid buses, 30 trolleybuses and 40 electric buses for a total of 380 vehicles.

Surface vehicles (buses, trams and trolleybuses) equipped with a platform or lift also have a space reserved for strollers and wheelchairs for people with disabilities, marked with a special pictogram for a total of 1.450 seats.

“Travelling safely - declare the councilor for Mobility Marco Granelli and the city councilors Angelica Vasile and Alessandro Giungi - is particularly important for all those people for whom standing is uncomfortable. This is why priority seats are very important and it is right that the right to sit is respected. Giving greater visibility to the seat helps to remember that getting up and giving way is a courtesy but above all a civic duty. Thanks to this choice, Milan wants to help everyone to behave civilly and remember that allowing those in a particular situation to be able to use public transport in the easiest and safest way possible is not a concession, but a right, and also a way so that courtesy and kindness always prevail, a way to improve the quality of life for everyone".
