Transport. From MIT 830 million euros for the extensions and improvements of subways and surface lines

Milan, 28 December 2019 - In recent days, Milan has received significant funding for public transport infrastructure from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. This amounts to 830 million euros for extensions and upgrades of subways and surface lines.

The MIT has in fact given a positive opinion on the inclusion of 15 million euros in the budget law for the upgrading of the Cinisello Balsamo – Monza Bettola hub between M1-M5-A4-SS36; the MIT also included 812 million euros in the draft decree that received the agreement in a unified State Regions Municipal conference for the extension of the M1 from Bisceglie to Baggio-Olmi-Cesano Boscone, for the signaling system and for 21 trains of the M3 and 50 trolleybuses. With another recently approved decree, 1,9 million euros were allocated to the Municipality of Milan for the design (PFTE) of the M4 Segrate-Linate hub, the extension of the M5 S.Siro - Settimo Milanese, for the extension of the Northern light rail system from Bicocca to Niguarda Emergency Hospital and for the extension of tram 2 from Bausan to Bovisa Fs and Villapizzone Fs (another section of the Northern light rail system).

The projects do not only concern interventions in Milan but above all extensions in the Milan metropolitan area which will make it possible to offer a competitive and usable public transport system to approximately 4,5 million inhabitants who live and work in the over 230 Municipalities of the Metropolitan City of Milan and of the Province of Monza and Brianza and surrounding areas, one of the most densely inhabited areas in Europe. Economic growth, the ability to attract work and the quality of life of these territories depends on the ability to offer flexible, effective and sustainable mobility.

"Milan's choice and ability to design and invest in public transport infrastructure in the city and in the metropolitan area has been rewarded - declares Marco Granelli, councilor for Mobility and Public Works -.  State investments come thanks to timing, collaboration between several local authorities, the quality of the proposals aimed at improving travel in a strategic area and combating congestion from private traffic and climate-altering emissions. I thank the Government and hope for an intense and structural collaboration between the local authorities which together represent the citizens, workers and businesses of the large metropolitan area around Milan. Now it is a question of moving forward with the definitive planning, in confirming the necessary co-financing from the budgets of the Municipality of Milan, the Lombardy Region, and the other local authorities involved. forgotten that the upgrades of the metropolitan lines lead to an increase in passengers and an increase in management costs: this is why we ask that the fund for national and regional public transport be increased, and that cities and municipalities not be left alone when they need to increase services. Unfortunately, regional transfers for the management of public transport in the Milan area in 2020 and the following years are decreasing: we cannot accept this".
