Milan, March 9 2022 – The Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala and the councilor for Economic Development and Employment Policies Alessia Cappello visited this morning the covered municipal market in Piazza Wagner, the oldest in the city, recently renovated thanks to a redevelopment operation which it took place starting last summer and ended in November.

The interventions were carried out by the Wagner Market Consortium, winner of the twenty-year concession tender, and required an investment of approximately 660 thousand euros. The Consortium brings together under a single representation all 28 historic commercial operators of the market (for 46 sales stations). A tradition of activities handed down from father to son that has made this market one of the most appreciated in the whole city for the quality of its products.

The modernization of the Wagner market mainly involved the renovation of the plumbing and electrical systems, the inclusion of the heating and cooling system and free Wi-Fi to offer greater comfort to customers. In order to save energy, the fixtures were replaced and a photovoltaic system was installed. A bar has been opened in the small square in the center of the market and tables have been set up for the consumption of products purchased on site. Finally, a meeting space was inaugurated for carrying out community initiatives and for services such as a medical clinic for the elderly and homework help and snacks for the little ones.

"The municipal covered markets – said Mayor Giuseppe Sala – have always been a place much loved by citizens both for the vitality that characterizes them and for the quality of the products that are sold there daily. They are points of reference for good shopping but also for the sociability and proximity of the services they can offer. They are therefore strategic in the creation of the city in 15 minutes towards which we are directing our interventions to increase the quality of life in each neighborhood. It is therefore good that they are renovated, made more modern and welcoming, opening up to aggregation and new commercial experiences".

"The redevelopment program of the local markets – explained the councilor for Economic Development Alessia Cappello – reaches a new stage with the Wagner market. Each market has its own peculiarities linked to the neighborhood in which it is located, to the potential customers, to the services that can host to become an all-round place for socializing, combining the main vocation, the commercial one, with various other opportunities for aggregation and utility. We are working on all these aspects as well as on concession formulas that can at the same time enhance the operators already present and open up to new experiences, such as on-site administration and extended opening until the evening which are proving successful where we have already introduced them".

The market has 46 sales positions assigned to 28 commercial operators and offers a variety of shops with all types of food specialties: top quality beef, sheep, horse, pork and poultry meat; now historic fish and seafood stalls; artisanal cheeses, Italian DOP or French AOC, with controlled origins; wide selection of fruit and vegetables.
In the market there are bakeries and pastry shops, which produce bread, cakes and focaccias, including the real Milanese michetta, now a rarity. There is also a wine shop, takeaways and delicatessens, 'organic' foods, sushi and ethnic foods, as well as household products and supplies for pets.

Following a public tender, in 2021 the structure was entrusted for a twenty-year period to the Consortium made up of the historic operators of the Market, who took charge of the design and implementation of the functional renewal and structural renovation interventions.

The structure has no architectural barriers and can be easily reached by public transport: it is served by the M1 Wagner metro and other adjacent ATM lines, not far from Corso Vercelli and the old Trade Fair.
