Open roads. Via Ascanio Sforza pedestrian for the summer, new 30 and residential zones coming soon

From via Marghera to via delle Leghe the public spaces dedicated to chairs and tables expand. Maran-Granelli: “A summer to be enjoyed outdoors in safety”

Milan, June 20 2020 - From 30 June to 31 October the pedestrianization of via Ascanio Sforza returns, in the stretch between via Scoglio di Quarto and via Conchetta. The Council approved the resolution establishing a ban on car transit in the evening hours, every day, even on weekends with a small change in time. A provision already tested over the past summers which will allow traders to use the space for tables, chairs and umbrellas as part of the new simplified procedures for the occupation of public land, as recently established for portions of Largo Treves, Via delle Armed Forces and Piazza San Materno and Piazza Giovine Italia and Via Santa Tecla.

In particular, the transit ban is set from Monday to Thursday from 20pm to 2am the following day, on Friday and Saturday from 19pm to 3am the following day and on Sunday from 19pm to 2am the following Monday.
To ensure adequate compensation for the mobility needs of residents of the neighboring streets, temporary Limited Traffic Zones will be established in the same time slots in via Scoglio di Quarto, corso Manusardi, via Bettinelli and via Lagrange.

Access to the ZTL will in any case be guaranteed to the vehicles of residents and those domiciled in the streets affected by the measure in possession of the permit issued by the Zone 5 Command, while access to the pedestrian area will be guaranteed only to vehicles headed towards properties whose access involves the need to pass through the pedestrian area itself.
Velocipedes, emergency and police vehicles, support vehicles for demonstrations or events, vehicles that must carry out essential services in the pedestrian area (subject to authorization from the Local Police) and vehicles of street cleaners will also be able to pass through both areas.

"The Navigli and the Darsena are among the most popular places in the summer - declare the councilors Pierfrancesco Maran (Urban Planning) and Marco Granelli (Mobility) -. This is a particular summer, in which the outdoor spaces are even more attractive Measures like this therefore become fundamental to guarantee that we live in the city safely, which is why we combine pedestrianization with measures such as 30 zones and residential areas."

Based on the requests received from traders for the installation of chairs and tables, the Administration has in fact established through ordinances the establishment of seven new zones 30 and four residential areas where the speed limit will be set at 15 km/h.

Zone 30 become via Pacini, via Don Giuseppe Andreoli, via Venini, via Marghera, via della Moscova, via Ugo Bassi. A further piece of the "Open Roads" strategy, which provides for the increase in areas with a maximum permitted speed limit of 30 km per hour on approximately 60% of the entire urban road network.

The first "residential areas" will be created in via Thaon de Ravel, via Giovanni Rasori, via Varanini and via delle Leghe. These are areas in which the pedestrian will have the right of way and will be able to occupy the roadway, in this case for example by sitting at a table in a bar or restaurant, while cars will have to respect certain rules of conduct, starting from the speed limit 15km/h. Commercial activities that have requested it will therefore be able to place tables and chairs in place of some parking stalls. As required by article 135, paragraph 12 of the Regulation for the execution and implementation of the New Highway Code, residential areas will be equipped with special signs (blue and white rectangle with two children playing ball near the house).
