From via Santa Tecla to via delle Forze Armate, the areas for commercial activities are expanding. Maran and Granelli: "New public space recovered to experience the neighborhoods 15 minutes away"

Milan, June 16 2020 - Largo Treves, via delle Forze Armate, piazza Giovine Italia, piazza San Materno and via Santa Tecla. There are five new pedestrian areas approved by the Council as part of the plan to expand public spaces intended for commercial activities which will bring new places to live in the neighborhoods in safety and in compliance with the rules on social distancing, a piece of the Open Streets strategy and more general plan of the Milan 2020 plan.

The locations of the various interventions were identified based on the requests received in recent weeks from traders as part of the new simplified procedures for the occupation of public land, which provide for the possibility of placing tables, chairs and umbrellas on roads, pavements and green areas. . Based on the requests received, in the coming weeks further locations may be identified where similar measures can be applied, for example in via Ascanio Sforza, or 30 zones or residential streets with a speed limit of 10 km/h can be established.

"These interventions are part of the 'Strade Aperte' project which redesigns public spaces starting from gentle mobility - declare the councilors Pierfrancesco Maran (Urban Planning) and Marco Granelli (Mobility) -. If on the one hand we allow traders to recover precious areas in the vicinity of their activity even where the width of the sidewalks does not allow it, on the other hand we free up important public space, offering citizens new opportunities to live outdoors in their neighborhood, rediscover streets, squares and gardens within a 15 minute walk from home".

The Council therefore approved the temporary pedestrianization of Largo Treves (in the stretch between Via Solferino and Via Palermo), Via delle Forze Armate (in the stretch between Via Cerani, Via Giannella and Via Dalmine), Piazza Giovane Italia, Piazza San Materno (in the stretch between via Accademia and the church of S. Maria al Casoretto) and via Santa Tecla.

The new pedestrian areas established will be in force 24 hours a day, 24 days a week, until the end of the emergency period, now defined as 7 October 7. The transit and parking of rescue, emergency and emergency vehicles will however be guaranteed. police, vehicles supporting events and those used for road cleaning and maintenance.

The works for the installation of platforms or other protection methods, as well as for the modification of horizontal and vertical road signs will be borne by the operators, who will be able to largely deduct the costs through the contributions made available by the "Safe Working" tender of the Lombardy region.

In the city there are almost 700 commercial activities that have already obtained the concession for the occupation of public land through the new simplified procedure which provides for the free COSAP until 31 October, for a total of over 21.000 m1 of granted areas, especially in Municipality 3 and Municipality 1.900. Approximately XNUMX requests have been registered to date: the requests have come from bars, restaurants and pizzerias, but there is also the case of a pharmacy and a bookshop, and a greengrocer.
