Open roads. 1.200 concessions for bars and restaurants, almost 6.500 m30 of pedestrian areas and XNUMX km of slow mobility roads

The outcome of the first weeks: six new pedestrian areas and almost 50 streets with speeds of 30 or 15 km per hour. Maran-Granelli: "Scrupulous work to allow traders to expand their spaces and create places of sociality"

Milan, 27 June 2020 - Almost 6.500 m25 of pedestrianized areas, 30 km of 3 roads, more than 15 km of residential streets with a speed limit set at 45 km/h, almost XNUMX thousand mXNUMX of land granted. This is the outcome of the first weeks of measures in favor of the expansion of public areas that can be used by traders through facilitated procedures for the occupation of public land.

In addition to the many merchants who have been able to place tables in already pedestrian areas, squares and sidewalks, there are just as many who have asked the Administration for the possibility of occupying portions of the street, thus requiring measures to contain vehicular traffic. For this reason, after a specific study, the Council approved the proposal that will be submitted to the City Council to allow occupation on public land also for activities located on "local roads" with a speed limit of 50 km/h. This possibility will thus be added to that already provided for roads with a limit of 30 or 15 km.

"With the offices we are doing very intense and scrupulous work to allow the greatest number of commercial activities to expand outwards - declare the councilors Pierfrancesco Maran (Urban Planning) and Marco Granelli (Mobility) -. Where no critical issues are found in terms of road safety or traffic, improving the usability of the roads with traffic reduction measures becomes an opportunity for everyone: for traders who can increase the number of seats, for citizens who can enjoy socializing more peacefully in these summer months So far we have already issued over 1.200 concessions."

The Council has therefore established three new temporary pedestrian areas: until the end of the emergency period, currently set for 31 October, for 24 hours a day, 24 days a week, access to cars at the intersection between via Laghetto and via della Signora, at the intersection between via Varese and Largo La Foppa and in the dead-end section of the main road of via Molino delle Armi, immediately east of piazza Vetra. In any case, the transit and parking of rescue, emergency and police vehicles, vehicles supporting events and those used for road cleaning and maintenance will be guaranteed. The three new pedestrian areas are added to the six already approved in recent weeks: portions of Largo Treves and Piazza San Materno, Piazza Giovane Italia and Via Santa Tecla, as well as portions of Via delle Forze Armate and Via Ascanio Sforza in the evening hours only. The Council also confirmed as permanent the pedestrianization of Piazza Angliberto II carried out in 7 as a tactical urban planning intervention as part of the "Open Squares" project.
