STEMintheCity. “The STEM Forest” is born in the Segantini park

The event closes the cycle of five editions by donating 20 thousand euros for a new green space in the city. Councilor Cocco: "The culmination of a journey that began in 2017 which allowed us to reach 92 thousand boys and girls throughout Italy"

Milan, July 24 2021 – STEMintheCity donates 20 thousand euros for the creation of the STEM Forest at Segantini Park. The initiative was created to help increase the presence of greenery in the city and will, at the same time, be a laboratory for the training of new scientists engaged in the study of biodiversity.

The birth of the STEM Forest is the final act that closes the five editions of STEMintheCity, the event organized by the Municipality of Milan together with important entities from the public and private sector and with the support of the United Nations to promote access to paths and to studies in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) field and the diffusion of new digital technologies as positive factors for an inclusive society without gender stereotypes.

“The STEM Forest crowns a journey started in 2017 which has allowed us to reach 92 thousand girls and boys not only in Milan but throughout Italy, thanks also to the dedicated digital platform – declares Roberta Cocco, Councilor for Digital Transformation and Civic Services of the Municipality from Milan. An important experience which I hope will encourage the public and private partners who have accompanied us in recent years to continue to commit to recognizing the fundamental role of scientific knowledge and technology as strategies for sustainable development, innovation and growth, to plan together the best possible future for the new generations".

The STEM Forest was created in continuity with the initiative of the same name by Bicocca University, which developed its STEM Forest within the Bicocca Nursery, and is part of the We Tree project, which has among its objectives the creation of new green areas in Italian cities, thus spreading good environmental practices. It will be a space open to the whole city and will host plants of different species, from the tree species most suited to the climatic and environmental conditions of the Po Valley, to the shrubs that are most capable of attracting pollinating insects and where training events in the field will be organised. STEM open to all.

STEMINTHECITY

From 2017 to 2021 STEMintheCity offered tailor-made courses for schools of all levels, organizing, thanks also to the support of 395 partners, 640 events and offering concrete training and growth opportunities to nursery, lower and secondary schools grade, up to universities. In the last edition alone, 322 schools and 35 universities were reached.
If the first three editions involved all nine city municipalities, from the center to the outskirts, the last two were characterized by an increasingly digital, open and inclusive approach which allowed us to go beyond the boundaries of the city, with a online platform full of testimonials, training content, live streaming events and webinars on demand.
