Milan, September 16 2021 – Milan has its first statue depicting a woman from the city's history: the work inaugurated on Wednesday 15 September representing Cristina Trivulzio di Belgiojoso, a Milanese heroine of the Risorgimento whose 150th anniversary of death this year is located in Piazza Belgioioso.

The project is promoted by the Brivio Sforza Foundation, with the support of the Banca di Credito Cooperativo di Milano, the contribution of the Municipality of Milan and the patronage of the Lombardy Region.

The initiative, born from an idea of the creative cultural enterprise Le dimore del quartette, fills a void: none of the 121 statues in the city are in fact dedicated to a female personality, with the exception of subjects of religious or allegorical iconography.

The statue, which therefore marks a very important milestone, portrays Cristina Trivulzio di Belgiojoso, Milanese heroine of the Risorgimento, interpreted by the sculptor Giuseppe Bergomi on the basis of the iconographic documentation collected by the Brivio Sforza Foundation.

Cristina, a multifaceted and courageous character, with great determination brought and made visible the gaze and voice of women at the heart of the great themes of her and our time. A woman of culture, educated and fortunate in terms of class and wealth, she put herself on the line with competence and determination to create a more inclusive and sustainable model of society, despite receiving very strong resistance from her peers.

The statue finds its home in the intimate Piazza Belgioioso, a few steps from the Duomo and Piazza della Scala. And it is precisely because of this location that he portrays the heroine "elegantly sitting" in her living room.
