Milan, February 28 2022 – The Municipality of Milan and the University of Milan have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at the valorisation, redevelopment and management with public funds of the municipally owned Saini Sports Center located in via Corelli 136.

The protocol envisages: the complete renovation and adaptation of the Sports Center according to a multi-year work plan, divided into three lots, for a foreseeable investment under public resources, paid by the University, of approximately 36 million euros; free management for over 50 years by the University of Milan, which will take effect from 2025; the strengthening of the presence of the School of Motor Sciences within the centre, to the benefit of the institutional activities of the University and all students, creating a center of excellence for the city; the maintenance of the sports center open to all citizens for sporting activities, with renovated and upgraded structures.

The sports facility, among the largest owned by the Municipality, designed and built by CONI starting in 1971, has been managed since 1994 by Milanosport, which also guarantees the presence within the Center of sports federations such as the Italian Swimming Federation (FIN ), Italian Athletics Federation (FIDAL), Italian Baseball and Softball Federation (FIBS), Italian Referees Federation (FIA), as well as various sports associations and clubs, hosting various national and international competitions every year. The center registers over two hundred thousand visitors between athletes and sportsmen every year.

The School of Motor Sciences of the University of Milan, a public structure, is unique in the Italian panorama for the disciplines present in the study plan and represents an academic excellence of our city: a balanced combination of theoretical and practical disciplines that guarantees the continuous dialogue between the scientific and humanistic foundations of physical and sporting activity, with their practical application.

The territory, thanks to the synergistic action of the two public bodies in a large renovated sports centre, will benefit from the increase in the offer of sporting activities and events, of a national and international nature, with all the repercussions on the economic-social fabric of the city; while the public nature of the two bodies will guarantee and legitimize the protection of each user group with regards to the applicable tariffs. Finally, the presence of sports federations or sports disciplines associated with CONI will be regulated through specific agreements, in order to guarantee the activity of general interest to which they are entitled.
