Sport. The first edition of the Milano Women Rowing Cup begins on Saturday 14 September
The rowing regatta between 120 athletes from the most prestigious international universities
Milan, September 10 2019 - On Saturday 14 September from 16pm to 19.30pm in the Darsena, 222 athletes from the most prestigious European universities and beyond will compete in a 120 meter sprint regatta: Oxford, Cambridge (UK), St. Petersburg (Russia), Copenhagen (Denmark), University of Grenoble (France), Italy Old Stars, Olona rowers, Venetian Universities Cus Venezia, Monate rowers, CUS Turin, LUISS Rome, F 205 Milan all in the 8+ category with helmsman, the queen boat of rowing.
With the patronage of the Municipality of Milan, the Lombardy Region, the Italian Rowing Federation, the CONI Lombardy Committee, the British Chamber of Commerce for Italy, the Ticino Villoresi Consortium and the CUSI Lombardy, the event aims to become a fixed event in the city's sports schedule, with the support of the Sports Department of the Municipality of Milan: "As a municipal administration - declares Roberta Guaineri, Sports Councilor of the Municipality of Milan - we are very proud to sponsor this event of international scope which for an entire purpose week will make the Darsena the setting for an extraordinary sporting spectacle: the young athletes who make up the most renowned rowing teams in the world will compete until the last stroke of the oar on the waters of our city's port, offering citizens and tourists a unique performance and exciting. An event which, in addition to conveying the highest values of sport, is also aimed at raising public awareness of the importance of prevention for safeguarding health".
The event organized by SSD Sportivamente also aims to be a showcase to support the LILT Milan section, Charity Partner of the event, for the prevention of breast cancer. For this reason all the athletes will wear the pink ribbon as a symbol of their support and at the LILT stand in the Darsena there will be a dermatologist present to talk about prevention and correct exposure to sun rays in all seasons and where it will be possible to take a test to discover the own phototype.
The realization of this first edition of the Milan Women Rowing Cup was possible thanks to the support of the Italian Sailors Association Milan Group which will host the athletes after the race at the prestigious headquarters in Darsena and the Crono Milano Association of the Italian Timekeepers Federation which will ensure the correct running of the regattas.
Special participation, six dogs from the SOCIT dog units, including the veteran Jaguar, mascot of the Milan Group Italian Sailors Association who with two jet skis and lifeguards will guarantee the safety of those competing in the water.
During the day, thanks to the collaboration of the Canottieri Olona, Canottieri Milano, Canottieri San Cristoforo/Cus Milano and the San Carlo Sports Centre, it will be possible for everyone to try the oar ergometers and promote sporting activity and in particular rowing.
Partners who contributed to the realization of the event are Tecnowear, Cantiere Nautico Lido Filippi, Nike, Acqua Chiarella, Decathlon, Woodstock, Pasticceria Kia Sweet, Pizzeria Peperino e Milano, Kometa Italia, Faverzani and Panizzari wineries.

Rowing and Milan can celebrate a long-standing marriage and this event will also be a very important for our territory where sport, culture and tourism mix together, giving life to emotions that warm the heart. A female event where determination, tenacity and willpower will certainly win and there will be no shortage of fun... as always in sport!" This is the declaration of the Undersecretary of the Lombardy Region with responsibility for major sporting events Antonio Rossi.
These are the events that will see the athletes as protagonists:
- Friday 13 September: Training sessions for female crews along the Naviglio Grande and in the Darsena.
- Saturday 14 September: Athletes village opening hours from 10.00 to 19.30
- 222 meter “one to one” sprint regattas from 16.00pm to 19.30pm followed by finals and awards.
- Sunday 15 September: 09.00 am Institutional meeting between the MUNICIPALITIES 1, 5, 6 and the athletes participating in the international regatta with flag raising at the Dei Marinai D'Italia Gruppo Milano headquarters and Italian national anthem performed by the Fanfare degli Alpini section of Milan, in which will be followed by the inauguration of the Sports Festival in Piazza XXIV Maggio in collaboration with Municipality 5 and CONI Milan.
