Sport. Expiring concessions for sports facilities have been extended to 2022

Milan, 26 April 2020 – The municipal council has approved the extension to 30 June 2022, and in any case to the end of the 2021/22 sports season and for a maximum of two sports seasons, of all agreements relating to the granting of concessions for the use of owned sports facilities municipal which will have their natural expiry by that date. An act that is part of the exceptional measures regarding the containment and management of the COVID-19 epidemiological emergency.

Further extensions will also be considered, again up to a maximum of two sports seasons, for use concessions expiring until 31 December 2025, according to the following criteria: lack of operating revenues which have resulted in deficit budgets; impossibility of amortizing the investments relating to the redevelopment and extraordinary maintenance works of the plant; greater mandatory, urgent and non-deferrable expenses deriving from the structural and management adaptation of the plant due to the health emergency.

“This is a first concrete intervention to support the activities of the concessionaires and avoid their irreversible crisis – declares Roberta Guaineri, Councilor for Sport –, a measure to guarantee the management and supervision of sports facilities and to ensure the sporting offer for the benefit of the community. In the next 2020/2021 season, in fact, the concessionaires will have to face a greater burden of expenses for the redevelopment of the facilities to guarantee minimum safety conditions among the athletes and a drastically reduced number of attendances due to the necessary distancing between people. With this provision, in fact, we help concessionaires who have deadlines until the end of the 2026 sports season, granting them the possibility of amortising the deficit of this season by 2028".

The exceptional situation linked to the spread of COVID-19 has effectively suspended all competitive and grassroots sporting activities within the 105 sports centers owned by the Municipality of Milan, largely entrusted to amateur sports clubs and associations. The extension intends to allow and facilitate an economic-financial rebalancing of the concessionaires' balance sheets. Furthermore, it will be possible for dealers to participate in all public procedures published by the Municipality.
