Milan, May 23 2022 – Running and playing sports to clean coasts and beaches suffocated by plastic waste. In view of World Oceans Day, on 8 June, Milan welcomes the invitation of the "Run for the oceans" initiative, promoted by adidas and its partner Parley for the oceans, and encourages athletes in the city to transform their training in a concrete contribution to safeguard the environment.

The challenge of "Run for the oceans", now in its fifth edition, is global. From May 23rd to June 8th, anywhere in the world, for every 10 minutes of sporting activity carried out, recorded from the app adidas Running, adidas and Parley will clean beaches, remote islands and coastlines of waste equivalent to the weight of a plastic bottle, up to a maximum of 250.000 kg, before it reaches the oceans.

Within the app, the Milan sports community will have a dedicated group to register in, "Milan x RFTO": it can be accessed both via the app and via a QR code.

Once registered, it will be possible to contribute to the collection of precious minutes of sporting activity to guarantee the health of the seas and coasts. For the first time, in addition to running minutes, it will also be possible to record the time dedicated to walking and other disciplines, such as tennis or football. Milanosport also promotes the collection of activity minutes, which will communicate it in its centres.

Run for the oceans

In Milan, the environmental actions foreseen by the global "Run for the oceans" program will culminate in Darsena. Here, from 31 May to 5 June, a high-impact "presence" will allow citizens and tourists to immerse themselves in the beauty of the oceans and reflect on how each of us can contribute to a future that respects nature and its ecosystems. Sponsored by the Municipality of Milan, the installation - which will be unveiled at the end of the month - and the connected experiential path will combine themes dear to the Administration in an engaging way: from environmental sustainability to the promotion of healthy and active lifestyles.
