Milan, March 27 2024 – After the experimentation started last December, the anti-degradation project of the Municipality of Milan enters its second phase. Today, Wednesday 27 March, a training day was organized for around thirty operators who will be present in some areas of the city to combat degradation in public spaces and reduce critical phenomena for people's dignity.
The project, thanks to the collaboration of the Prefecture, is also financed with funds from the Ministry of the Interior and is aimed at combating and preventing degradation and incorrect use of public space such as pavements, streets, squares, gardens and green spaces.

"We want to improve the quality, safety and usability of public spaces – declares Marco Granelli, Councilor for Security – and at the same time contain the factors of marginalization for homeless people or behaviors linked to social hardship with the collaboration of third sector subjects who they organize and plan their presence in neighborhoods and areas at risk of urban security, in close contact with our offices and in coordination with the local police. The project begins in April and is planned and financed for four months. Thanks to the resources requested from the Ministry of the Interior last year and obtained in recent days, we will shortly publish a tender so that it can have a new phase also with other organizations in the second half of 2024 and 2025. We believe that these actions must have continuity and constitute a constant contribution to security of the city, adding to the actions of the police forces and the local police".

In December the City Angels collaborated, now among the entities involved in the project there are the Volunteering and Civil Protection Group, the National Association of State Police, the National Carabinieri Association - Milan Section, the Ugolini Milan Volunteer Unit and Progetto Ark.

There are three urban areas affected by the service: the area adjacent to the Central Station, via Benedetto Marcello and the adjacent streets, the area of Corso Concordia between Piazza Risorgimento and Piazza del Tricolore.

The staff on the street, professional and voluntary, will intervene in situations of bivouac, begging, harassment, abandonment of waste, alcohol abuse, to prevent these behaviors and orient people in difficulty towards the system of existing social and socio-health services and represent for the citizens a point of reference and sign of the presence of the institutions, as well as informing local police and police forces in critical situations.
All activities will be planned, coordinated and monitored by the Security Department and with the Local Police.
