We were born to walk. Fifty primary schools and 2019 thousand children participated in the 15 edition

The awards ceremony tomorrow Palazzo Marino of the ten winning classes of the creative competition

Milan, May 19 2019 – There are ten winning classes in the creative competition of the 2019 edition of We were born to walk, the initiative aimed at promoting the use of alternative means to the private car for home-school routes, which this year involved fifty schools Primary schools and around 15 thousand children throughout the city, in the week from 1 to 5 April. The awards ceremony, in which around two hundred children and their teachers will participate, will take place tomorrow, Monday 20 May, in the Alessi Hall in Palazzo Marino.

With the claim "Our luggage for going alone", the 2019 edition wanted to offer children, schools and families a reflection on the theme of autonomy in the daily movements of the little ones and what it means to move alone. A theme chosen because it represents an important, even if underestimated, problem of the Milanese (and Italian) reality: in Milan, in fact, only 2% of primary school pupils go to school without being accompanied by an adult (data from the Municipality of Milan/Abcittà, Pedibus Project). This very low autonomy has negative implications on the psycho-physical development of children and in particular on their self-esteem, their ability to orient themselves and socialize.

Giochi Preziosi will instead give a free supply of GoPop trolley backpacks for one of the winning classes, Granarolo will offer a snack at the final event while the Demetra Cooperative and the Ludosofici will give away educational workshops.

The objective was focused in particular on the theme of the autonomy of the little ones, on travel, not only from home to school, but also within one's own home, school and outdoors. The theme also brings with it a reflection on how parents, teachers and members of a community can find the right balance between the desire to protect children and that of guaranteeing the satisfaction of their natural need for autonomy.

We were born to walk is a game project on the theme of sustainable mobility aimed at students of public and private primary schools in the city of Milan. For a week, from 1 to 5 April 2019, children were invited to go to school on foot, by bicycle, skateboard, scooter or by public transport. At the basis of the initiative is the idea that a real improvement in the living conditions of the city can only be the result of a collective and synergistic action of all the parties involved: the children together with their families, the teachers , public and private institutions.

We were born to walk is created and curated by Genitori Antismog, with the collaboration of the Municipality of Milan and the support of Fondazione Cariplo, and thanks to the contribution of the main sponsor Centro Medico Santagostino and ConsiliaRegulatory, Giochi Preziosi/GoPop, Clear Channel/Bikemi. Thanks to the Teatro alla Scala and the Piccolo Teatro of Milan.
