School. Inspections of 102 roofs with local police drones have begun

Scavuzzo and Limonta: “Collaboration of two departments for the safety of school buildings”

Milan, July 8 2020 – Inspections of the roofs of Milanese schools began this week, carried out with the use of local police drones. This activity is the result of an agreement between the Department of Safety and that of School Buildings and will allow the state of the roofs of the buildings that house the Milanese school complexes to be verified.

In total, 102 roofs will be checked, chosen on the basis of a list provided by the school building department which started from the critical issues encountered due to the infiltrations present and the impossibility of reaching the roofs with the aerial ladder.

This type of inspection carried out by specialized personnel from the Integrated Security and Civil Protection area, together with school building technicians and MM operational directors to coordinate the execution of the surveys according to the critical issues reported, allows us to check not only the presence of displaced tiles, but also the general situation of the facades and the state of maintenance of the downspouts. The view from above also allows the verification of the static nature of the decorative elements, chimney pots and flues.

The images collected will be useful for understanding the nature of the problems and the best way to solve them, i.e. whether it will be enough to plan a small localized intervention, or on the contrary, whether a real renovation of the roof will be necessary. In this last case, the acquisition of the survey of the roofs and facades will be of great help for the development of the designs within the competence of the Schools Technical Area and in support of the ordinary maintenance activities carried out by MM.

Added to all this is that these images can help reduce the approval times of projects by the superintendency.

Finally, the savings for the administration are not secondary, considering the average cost of a scaffolding system, around 20 thousand euros, which allows you to safely climb onto a roof that cannot be reached via an aerial ladder.

“From structural monitoring to the detection of humidity infiltrations – explains Paolo Limonta, councilor for school buildings – drones are increasingly a very valid tool to use in construction. At this moment what we are really concerned about is the safety of the boys and girls who attend our schools. The speed in checking the roofs will allow us to have an even more precise and detailed picture of the type of intervention necessary for the waterproofing of the roofs and for the maintenance of the downspouts of the Milanese schools, which we have financed with 14 million euros".

"Technology and innovation at the service of the safety of people and places - comments the Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Security Anna Scavuzzo -: the local police of Milan has agents and officers authorized to pilot these instruments and willingly lends itself to useful collaboration to improve the maintenance activities of school buildings for the safety of the youngest citizens and those who work with and for them".
