International relations. The Milan Urban food policy pact turns 5, the ceremony online

Milan, 17 December 2020 – This year marks the fifth birthday of the Milan Urban food Policy Pact, launched by the city of Milan in 2015 to promote sustainable urban food systems and which is now joined by over 200 cities representing over 350 million people around the world.

To celebrate the work of these five years, it was decided to replace the 2020 MUFPP Global forum ceremony - which due to the Coronavirus emergency could not be held in Mérida, Mexico, as planned - with a digital event organized by Secretariat of the pact and available from 13pm on the new dedicated website: milan2020.milanurbanfoodpolicypact.org.

The event opens with a message from the Mayor of Milan and President of the Steering Committee Giuseppe Sala and the other representatives of the Committee. This is followed by a presentation of the main actions to mitigate the effects of the pandemic on the food system (from help to the population, to the promotion of healthy diets, up to support for the food supply chain) implemented during the Covid-19 pandemic by the signatory cities, to with the participation of the deputy mayor of Milan with responsibility for Food policy Anna Scavuzzo, the Director of the scientific and technological area of Fondazione Cariplo Carlo Mango, Marcela Villarreal (Director of Partnership and UN Collaboration Division FAO), Gunhild A. Stordalen (Founder & executive chair EAT Foundation ) and Thom Achterbosch (Senior researcher Wageningen economic research). The event will be closed by the Mayor of Barcelona Ada Colau, who will host the Global forum in 2021.

Furthermore, thanks to the great participation of the signatory cities in the Milan pact talks 2020, the Municipality of Milan and the Cariplo Foundation have decided to create and make available to the cities a video library of good practices implemented during the pandemic, with over 100 contributions from the signatory cities of the Milan Urban food policy pact which can be consulted on the new one Youtube channel.
