Reinventing cities. Over 60 proposals for the 7 Milanese sites

The first phase of the C40 tender successfully concluded. Councilor Maran: “Milan confirms itself as an attractive city for designers and investors”

Milan, June 5 2020 – Sixty-one applications to regenerate 7 strategic places in the city. It is the outcome of the first phase of the second edition of Reinventing cities, the international tender launched in December by the Municipality together with C40 which provides for the alienation and establishment of surface rights of sites to be allocated to environmental and urban regeneration projects.

"It is a very important result - declares the Councilor for Urban Planning Pierfrancesco Maran - which demonstrates how, despite the extremely difficult moment for everyone, Milan continues to be an attractive city for architects and designers who want to experiment with innovative ideas and for international investors. We are waiting to see the proposals that will be selected in the second phase but we are sure that, as for the first edition of the tender, projects of high environmental and architectural quality will arrive. We remind you that the main characteristic of Reinventing cities compared to other tender procedures is that the the winning project will not be the one with the highest economic offer, but the one that will be assessed as having the best quality according to a set of environmental parameters".

11 proposals have arrived for Loreto, which will have to develop starting from the rules of the Territorial Government Plan, enhancing the square as a hinge between Corso Buenos Aires, Viale Monza and Via Padova and reorganizing the road system to generate new pedestrian spaces, 10 for the Bovisa node, whose regeneration will be an opportunity to mend the neighborhood and integrate the station as a gateway to a system of strategic urban functions.

Seven applications for Lambrate, where on the basis of the Program Agreement for the regeneration of the railway yards, a sustainable neighborhood will have to be created with affordable residential housing, public spaces, green areas and neighborhood services for 60% of the entire surface.

The Civitavecchia area in Crescenzago had 12 proposals, 13 for the former slaughterhouse and one for the area of via Monti Sabini: in these three sites the sites will have to be built social residential housing, in particular for rent, to respond to the strong demand for affordable homes. Finally, there are 7 applications for the Liberty buildings in viale Molise where services for the whole city could also be created.

The tender now provides for the appointment of a judging commission for each site (which will be made up of representatives of the Municipality of Milan and C40, international urban planning/architecture experts, local environmental experts and economic experts, and representatives of Ferrovie dello Stato as regards the Lambrate and Ferrovie Nord sites for the Bovisa hub) which will evaluate the projects by selecting, for each site, up to a maximum of five finalists who will have to develop the detailed proposal including the economic offer and finally, in the first quarter of next year, the identification of the winning project for each of the 7 sites.

Architects, urban planners, designers, developers, entrepreneurs, environmental experts, start-uppers, neighborhood associations, innovators and artists were invited to participate in the call, whose objective is to promote healthy, green, economically sustainable and resilient urban development.

Reinventing cities, which in the first edition brought innovative and high environmental quality projects for the Scuderie de Montel, the Greco railway yard and portions of via Doria and via Serio, this year saw the participation of 10 cities from around the world: over in Milan, Madrid, Rome, Chicago, Dubai, Montreal, Singapore, Cape Town, Reykjavik.
