Milan, May 18 2022 – The Municipality of Milan aims to redevelop the former covered municipal market in Piazza Selinunte. The relaunch plan is divided into two phases: from today until June 13th the public notice is open to select temporary activities that will animate the structure in the next 12 months, until June 30th 2023; in the meantime a notice will be prepared for the definitive assignment.

The municipal administration intends to select a temporary project to promote aggregation and participation by carrying out, from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023, educational, social, sporting, cultural and recreational activities in the structure through collaboration with associations and bodies of the third sector.

Projects will be admitted which, through a proposal of initiatives, contain activities characterized by one or more typologies among:

  • social and recreational (hobbies, solidarity, artistic and creative workshops);
  • training (remedial courses to combat school dropout, Italian courses);
  • educational with particular attention to the world of young people;
  • cultural (conferences, concerts, theatrical performances, exhibitions);
  • sports and/or motor;
  • teaching and research (development of new skills and planning in marginal contexts).

The activities must be carried out in the part previously intended for the sales area (approximately 500 m2) and in the external spaces adjacent to the property. The Municipality of Milan has made economic support available for temporary activities which can reach up to a maximum of 40.000 euros in addition to the free concession of the property for temporary use related to the project.

Citizens will be able to enjoy the initiatives proposed in the spaces of the structure freely and free of charge.

Built in 1957, the former covered municipal market in Piazza Selinunte is a municipally owned building with a total surface area of 968 m2.

At the beginning of 2022 the last concessionary commercial activity, Bessi Supercarni Rho, abandoned the covered market following the expiry of the concession. The Administration has decided to invest in projects for this structure in order to transform it into a meeting place for the neighborhood and avoid possible illegal occupations.
