Milan, July 20 2021 - A new future for the former school in via Zama 23. In the coming weeks the abandoned building, periodically subject to improper occupations, will be made safe by the police and given over to AMSA to manage it, which will guarantee its cleaning and a security service. In the future, the former school could be converted into a hub for the housing emergency through a project which will combine the creation of a service for the most vulnerable with a regeneration of the urban context, with public spaces and infrastructure for the neighbourhood.

It is the municipal administration's plan for the former school building of approximately 7.200 m1923 owned by the municipality built in XNUMX which for decades housed a nursery school and an elementary school. The building has been unused for some years. The Municipality has tried several times to find a solution for its recovery, first through a possible exchange, then through sale, but in both cases the process was not successful.

In the next few days the police will begin clearing the building with the simultaneous implementation of safety works to avoid intrusions. Furthermore, waste will be removed and the spontaneous vegetation present will be cut in order to make the structure more controllable by AMSA which will guarantee a surveillance service.

“We are aware of the fact that this building represents an open wound for the neighborhood – declare the councilors Pierfrancesco Maran (Urban Planning) and Marco Granelli (Mobility) -. By securing and entrusting the structure to AMSA we will finally be able to act quickly, guaranteeing constant and effective supervision, while continuing to work in the medium term to outline a definitive future for the school. We thank the neighborhood committee, Marco Cormio and the other municipal councilors who have contributed in this process".

The Municipality of Milan has requested 25 million euros in funding as part of the National Recovery Plan for the creation of a hub for the housing emergency of fragile families in temporary difficulty, with low income and unable to independently search, for the precarious socio-economic conditions, a new home in the city at affordable rent. Finally, public open spaces will be provided to activate a synergy of relationships between the hub and the wider neighbourhood.
