Milan, May 29 2019 – “Activate a joint work program to launch a series of further concrete interventions, aimed at implementing new actions to address the problems of the San Siro district that are still not resolved”.
These were the words of the President of the Lombardy Region Attilio Fontana and the Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala after the meeting which took place today at the hub of the Milan Polytechnic in via Gigante, in the San Siro district, in which the councilor also took part the regional one for housing policies, Stefano Bolognini, the municipal one for housing, Gabriele Rabaiotti, and the President of ALER Milano Angelo Sala.

After work which, thanks to the 43 million euros of the neighborhood contract, led to the redevelopment of over 1.100 homes, a nursery school, the municipal market, the seniors' center as well as some road works, the Lombardy Region, the Municipality of Milan and ALER - also thanks to the availability of the Polytechnic of Milan - have today laid the foundations to continue a path whose central objective is to improve the quality of life of citizens.

Both the Municipality and the Region, being able to count on the existing neighborhood laboratory, on the most active citizens and on the local associations and on the network of existing services, also consider it useful and necessary to start a process of support for the creation of job opportunities, in particular for young residents, which could be linked to the results of the tender promoted by the Region, ALER and the Polytechnic on the redevelopment and reuse of empty non-residential spaces through the Luce a San Siro tender.

“From a careful analysis of needs – said the Mayor of Milan Sala – the main themes emerged on which there was full convergence between the Region and the Municipality. In particular, for our part, we will undertake to implement an extraordinary program of redevelopment of public spaces also in relation to the care, decoration and redevelopment of greenery. It is crucial to be able to give an initial response to the problem of work; We are ready to do our part in this too."

“As a Region – added the Lombard Governor Fontana – we aim to increasingly affirm the principles of legality for a social coexistence that guarantees serenity for citizens. Looking specifically at infrastructural interventions, we are ready to plan redevelopment works for some courtyards and, where possible, also in the 'interiors' of particularly degraded buildings not foreseen in the neighborhood contract. We have also pointed out that we can count on important economic resources allocated to this type of investment, deriving from the very recent agreement, the first in Italy, signed between the Lombardy Region and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport on 20 May".

“Particular attention – concluded the President of the Region and the Mayor of Milan – will be given to the issue of security with the idea of guaranteeing greater protection of the ALER courtyards thanks to figures such as those of the social concierge. Also on this front, the idea of strengthening the social actions already present in the neighborhood was shared."

The Region, Municipality, ALER and Polytechnic have said they are in favor of hypothesizing that the interventions that will be carried out in San Siro could be a model to be used also in other difficult contexts of the city such as via Bolla and via Gola but also in the 'very particular' context of via Quarti.
