European Tribute Project. New proposals from Milan to encourage sharing and sustainable mobility during major events

Milan, June 9 2022 – New ideas and new proposals to encourage the use of sharing mobility and carpooling on the occasion of large events with large influxes of people: this is the result of the study carried out by the Municipality of Milan as a contribution to the European TRIBUTE Project, which is part of the INTERREG program ADRION dedicated to the Adriatic-Ionian Region and involving eight partner cities (Ljubljana, Maribor, Novi Sad, Patras, Podgorica, Sarajevo and Zagreb) who are committed to carrying out "pilot" actions on innovative mobility solutions for elderly and disabled users , optimization systems for sharing mobility services, promotion of bicycle mobility, diffusion of electric vehicles and integrated urban transport management systems.

The new proposals, which the Milanese administration arrived at after several meetings with the interested parties, will be presented next July at the conference which will take place in Novi Sad and which brings together the cities involved.

From the living labs carried out with sharing mobility operators it emerged that to facilitate the use of their vehicles it would be useful to have guarded parking spaces, not necessarily fenced but easily recognizable, close to the location of the big event. The possibility of implementing a rental method with free parking time (during breaks) was also discussed to allow the same user to use the vehicle in sharing both on the outward and return journey. For carpooling, however, the need was identified to increase the dedicated parking areas both in the event location and in the interchange car parks, to encourage the use of carpooling especially for people arriving from outside Milan.

The Municipality of Milan has also organized meetings with cycling associations and representatives of taxi calling services to jointly develop proposals to reduce the use of car ownership. As regards the former, the provision of guarded parking areas and temporary cycle paths to reach the concert venue was recommended. The latter instead suggested the implementation of exclusive lanes for taxis from the beginning of the congested area to the passenger loading/unloading points, in addition to the proposal to promote the collective taxi service and to assign temporary parking areas to vehicles offering these services.

In the coming months, to identify the main challenges and analyze the critical issues, observation sessions will be carried out at major events. The aim is to gain a deeper understanding of how potential measures can be as efficient as possible to properly manage the major peaks in demand generated in events.
