Pon Metro. Eurovelo 5, the final project of the cycle route has been approved

The cycle route covers the Naviglio Pavese route, Duomo Sempione, Molino Dorino, Northern Route

Milan, October 12, 2019 - The definitive project of the Eurovelo 5 cycle route - Naviglio Pavese, Duomo Sempione, Molino Dorino, Northern Route has been approved by the Council. The investment is four million euros and the drafting of the project was entrusted to MM. The project is included and financed within the European Pon Metro program on sustainable mobility which identifies long-distance itineraries that embrace the entire continent, creating a network of routes.

The Milanese Eurovelo route has the objective of making the road axis that crosses the city from the center to the north, from Municipality 1 to Municipality 8, attractive and safe, and its creation contributes to the complete redevelopment of this axis and of Corso Sempione under the landscape and environmental profile.

More greenery and lanes dedicated to cycling and pedestrians, more safety at intersections, elimination of degradation and wild parking but also more regular spaces for residents: Corso Sempione will go from being a large urban avenue with four lanes in each direction, to tree-lined avenue equipped with a service road in each direction, two green tree-lined parterres with a two-metre internal lane reserved for bicycles and pedestrians, two lanes in each direction for vehicles. A system that will completely rebalance the spaces, reorganizing the free and green areas, today often used for wild parking. The redevelopment will allow the regular parking spaces intended mainly for residents to be redesigned, which will increase from approximately 700 to 966 spaces.

“This is an important and qualifying intervention – declares Marco Granelli, councilor for Mobility and Public Works – not only for the weight of the investment which fits coherently into Milan's sustainable mobility plan. The impact will bring benefits to the whole city but above all to the neighbourhood, rebalancing the current situation in favor of sustainable mobility which excessively favors motor vehicles and presents strong problems of wild parking and degradation of the entire green area, although stretches of one of the most beautiful accesses to the city, with a highly residential character. The project enhances the characteristics of the course and designs a new cycle-pedestrian axis in the centre-north direction which will connect the Arco della Pace, Piazza Firenze, Cascina Merlata and the Mind district".

The cycle-pedestrian route of Corso Sempione is inserted and completed with a system of different projects: the redevelopment of Piazza Firenze, the speed moderation (Zone 30) of the side streets of Viale Certosa and the connection with the square of the Cimitero Maggiore. Always with speed moderation interventions. This cycle path will be connected through Zone 30 of via Domodossola to the City Life cycle paths.

The project designed by the Municipality and MM was approved by Municipality 1 and Municipality 8 after having collected the observations together with those of the neighborhood committees that had been asking for this intervention for some time.
