Local police. Over 80 thousand euros worth of counterfeit items seized

Eleven people are under investigation; over 2.100 items with fake brands removed from the market

Milan, October 24 2020 - The activity of the Anti-illegality Unit of the local police continues to combat the phenomenon of counterfeiting within the city's weekly open markets. The last two operations, in viale Papiniano and via Crema, led to the seizure of items with a total value of approximately 65 thousand euros.

“Our Unit agents are increasingly encountering episodes of sale of counterfeit products by regular market operators - comments Deputy Mayor and Security Councilor Anna Scavuzzo -, a crime which is usually committed by illegal sellers. We ask everyone, market operators and trade associations, for maximum collaboration to protect citizens, who are often unaware that they are purchasing non-original goods and therefore potentially dangerous for their health". 

In particular, during a control activity at the Viale Papiniano market, the Anti-abusive Unit seized 70 sweatshirts with the Valentino and Balmain brands, kept inside two cardboard boxes and put up for sale at the list price of 395 euros each, three jackets with the Woolrich brand (with a commercial value of 1.800 euros) and four pairs of glasses with the Cartier brand (3.200 euros). In addition to the operation, together with the Predatory Crimes Unit, the search in the Central Station area of ​​a van which was used to sell counterfeit jeans, bearing the Disquared brand, at 100 euros each. A total of three people were investigated for the crimes of counterfeiting and receiving stolen goods and the total commercial value of the seized goods was approximately 50 thousand euros.

However, 560 items of clothing were seized following an operation that started from the market in Via Crema. The Anti-Abusive Unit carried out a search of a regular commercial operator, owner of a stall where counterfeit items bearing the Louis Vuitton, Fendi and Burberry brands were put up for sale. Once the suppliers of the goods were identified, the search activity was extended to a wholesale shopping center in Agrate, where four commercial activities were checked and over 500 items of the same type as those seized inside the market were found. Four people were investigated for counterfeiting and receiving stolen goods and the total commercial value of the goods was 15 thousand euros.

Again in the context of services to combat the phenomenon of counterfeiting, the Anti-Abusive Unit carried out two other important operations in the Paolo Sarpi area. The first led to the seizure of over 1.200 items, including several hundred masks, with distinctive signs of various fashion brands, for a total value of around 15.000 euros. The owner of the business has been reported. 

The latest operation arose from a report in the Duomo metro station which led to the search of a commercial establishment displaying counterfeit clothing for sale. Once the suppliers were identified, the search activity was extended to two businesses in Paolo Sarpi, where 290 women's coats, skirts, scarves, sweaters and capes with counterfeit brands and distinctive signs were found and seized. Three people reported.
