Rabaiotti: “The city is called to offer them new growth prospects”

Milan, November 1 2020 - A bridge towards full autonomy. This is the meaning of the national and regional experimentation of interventions in favor of girls and boys who have just turned 18, followed by social services who cannot live with their families on the basis of a provision from the judicial authority, called "care leavers".

The Municipality of Milan joins the project for the second consecutive time, thanks to the satisfactory results achieved during the first phase, with the aim of refining income support policies and consolidating Milan's primacy in Italy as the capital of rights and of social inclusion. The national experimentation is in fact part of the set of measures to combat poverty and therefore provides specific funding for interventions aimed at preventing it and allowing young people to complete their growth path.

“Autonomous by law – intervenes the councilor for social and housing policies Gabriele Rabaiotti – but often not yet from a work-income, housing or even psychological point of view, eighteen-year-olds who cannot count on the natural support of their family still need be followed, supported, directed. They must be able to find the appropriate support in the city that will allow them to grow. The Administration is therefore called upon to ensure that, through network interventions, tutoring actions aimed at completing their studies and entering the world of work and looking for a home, new and different opportunities are opened up for these children too. growth prospects. Not doing so would, in many cases, mean nullifying the efforts made up to that point, both by the children and the educators, and leaving them in a counterproductive condition of abandonment. For this reason, participating in the national trial, which goes in the exact opposite direction, is of extraordinary importance."

These are personalized support projects for around ten young people, who will be followed in relation to their specific life projects for a period ranging from one to three years, starting from next December, accompanying them towards the conquest of an adult life, definitively autonomous.

With a dedicated amount of 180 thousand euros, mostly financed by the Ministry of Labor and Social Policies and partly also by the Lombardy Region, the project is divided into various interventions, from the provision of "Scholarships for autonomy" (a maximum of 780 euros per month as an alternative or while waiting for obtaining the Citizenship Income) to help in identifying accommodation, up to the activation of educational tutors supported by groups of young people who can be of support in building the path towards autonomy, through a local, regional and national Youth Conference. Participation in training activities at a national level organized by the Ministry of Labor and Social Policies and the Istituto degli Innocenti of Florence, ministerial partner of the project, is also envisaged.
