Milan, June 17 2021 – The partial demolition of the public residential building complex in via Tofano 5, in Quinto Romano, consisting of three twin towers located on the same lot, has begun. The towers, despite their recent construction date (1986), have presented serious static problems in recent years: one (C) has already been the subject of an overall renovation and reinforcement intervention, while for the other two (A and B) demolition and subsequent reconstruction works had been planned for some time. The first part, carried out using an excavator, will be completed by the end of September, calculating approximately four weeks for the demolition of each tower down to the ground, to which must be added the time for the works on the underground portions. The second part of the intervention, i.e. the reconstruction, will start within the year.

"I am very happy that the operation has finally started - intervenes the councilor for social and housing policies Gabriele Rabaiotti -. It has been a long and troubled journey, that of the towers in via Tofano, which the inhabitants of the neighborhood have been waiting for for some time and which has finally reached the final goal. The satisfaction, therefore, is great, as is the desire to transform a problem - for the tenants, for the neighborhood and ultimately for the city - into an opportunity for development and decisive improvement of the conditions of living in public houses in Milan".

The Administration's objective is to transform a very problematic public housing complex from a maintenance and management perspective into an exemplary one from the point of view of environmental, architectural and social sustainability, increasing the availability of municipally owned housing, and also creating housing intended for to other users and other uses, with a view to diversification and integration between different types of residents and in general to the regeneration of the entire neighbourhood.

The two buildings, organized into 10 levels above ground, have the same composition of floors: with the reconstruction, the apartments will go from the current 100 to 118 (59 for each building), including about ten on the ground floors designed for people with disabilities; to these are added another 7 of accommodation available for temporary residences and spaces for offices and associations. The technological and plant solutions adopted will allow us to have a highly energy efficient building complex.

The overall cost of the operation is approximately 23 million, divided between ministerial and regional co-financing and those paid by the Municipality of Milan. The works management is entrusted to MM, which also acts as the contracting authority and coordinates safety.
