Tajani: “A widespread installation to raise awareness of the fight against climate change and the fight against polluting plastics”

Milan, October 17 2019 – Art and innovation come together in one hundred large artist globes scattered across the city to raise awareness among the Milanese of the issues of climate change and the fight against polluting plastics. This is the objective of the WePlanet project, created by the Mondadori Group and Mediamond with the patronage of the Municipality of Milan and the Lombardy Region.
WePlanet is a large open air collective exhibition of 100 eco-sustainable installations that will invade the streets of Milan from 12 April to 21 June 2020. The contents of WePlanet will be illustrated this morning in the Conference Room of Palazzo Reale by the Councilor for Policies for Work, Productive Activities and Commerce of the Municipality of Milan Cristina Tajani with Carlo Mandelli General Director of Italian Magazines Mondadori Group and Davide Mondo, CEO of Mediamond.

“Thanks to this widespread art installation, the environment and innovation come together, contributing to expanding the actions of the 'Milan Plastic Free' project launched by the Administration in recent months to raise awareness of respect for the planet and make our city the first Italian reality to eliminate the use of disposable plastics". This is how Cristina Tajani, Councilor for Labor Policies, Productive Activities and Commerce of the Municipality of Milan, comments on the initiative. "As an Administration we are happy to support all the initiatives carried out by private and public operators, who can contribute to this work of environmental education. It is through small daily gestures that major climate changes are combated, this is precisely what the many young people of the Thumberg generation are asking of us."

WePlanet, by exploiting the ability of art and creativity to stimulate a critical conscience in citizens, wants to contribute to bringing the urgency of addressing the sustainable transition to the center of the debate of institutions, operators and individual citizens as well as reiterating how crucial it is the individual role in the healing process of the planet. From this perspective, 100 large globes made and reproduced with recycled material - a diameter of over 1,30 cm and an overall height of 170 cm - will become the support entrusted to one hundred artists, designers and creatives, to interpret on the one hand the topic of pollution and climate change as well as informing the public on the topic of sustainable innovation.

“The Mondadori Group has undertaken a path of corporate social responsibility for about ten years in which it is committed to encouraging the diffusion of culture and ideas to the widest possible public every day,” declared Carlo Mandelli, general director of Periodici Italia of Mondadori Group. "As the first Italian publisher of magazines and digital, we know we have a great responsibility towards the 18 million readers and over 28 million users with whom we interact every month. We pursue our objective by guaranteeing them an offer of entertainment and information of quality and promoting content on all our channels that rewards plurality of thought, inclusion and gender diversity, with an approach always aimed at innovation", concluded Mandelli.

“We are very happy to participate in an initiative focused on spreading such an important message.” Says Davide Mondo, CEO of Mediamond. “Our dealership, in synergy with the most important Italian publisher, will ensure the initiative gets the media coverage it deserves. Telling the general public how companies are already moving towards a more sustainable future."

WePlanet is also an interactive exhibition which, thanks to the use of augmented reality, will allow the public to discover the individual work, the artist who interpreted it and the patron who adopted it, combining it with his personal vision of sustainability. It will also be possible to view the complete map of the globes on display as well as being able to interface with the dedicated thematic channels of the Municipality of Milan.

The exhibition of these one hundred works will accompany the rich schedule of events that characterize the Milanese spring from 12 April to 21 June: Milan Art Week, Milan Design Week, Milan Piano City, Milan Food City, Milan Arch Week, Milan Photo Week and Milan Fashion Week.
