Open squares. From citizens and associations proposals for 65 new interventions

Great participation in the public notice promoted by the Administration. The technical offices will delve into the ideas in view of the projects that will be implemented in 2020

Milan, November 26 2019 – From Maciachini to Diocletian, from Tripoli to Sicily, from Ferrara to Bacon: there are 65 proposals from citizens, committees and associations received as part of "Open Squares in every neighborhood", the public notice launched by the Administration for the identification of new areas of intervention for 2020.
Places to be rethought, with tactical urban planning interventions on the model of Dergano, Angilberto II, Porta Genova, Spoleto/Venini, Lavater, capable of regenerating public space, transforming rest areas into social spaces for adults and children, improving quality of life in the neighborhoods.

“Piazze Aperte is ready to enter its second phase, which will increasingly see the direct involvement of the city – declares the councilor for Urban Planning Pierfrancesco Maran -. The numerous proposals received will be analyzed in the coming weeks by the various competent sectors of the Administration to establish their degree of feasibility and will form the basis of the projects we will carry out in 2020, with priority given to locations close to schools, nurseries and public services. The objective is that the interventions are increasingly shared with those who live and animate the neighborhoods on a daily basis."

"Piazze Aperte is an experiment that is working very well to put the people who live in the neighborhoods back at the center and give priority to sustainable mobility - declares Marco Granelli councilor for Mobility and Public Works -. Schools, neighborhood shops and residents benefit from a new way of experiencing the neighborhoods they live in and sharing helps us understand the real needs and translate them into concrete interventions".

"The tool that we want to dedicate to the implementation of the next interventions - explains the councilor for Participation, Active Citizenship and Open Data, Lorenzo Lipparini - is the 'collaboration pact', the agreement by which the Administration and citizens work together on the development of a same shared project of urban regeneration and recovery. In the coming months we will analyze the feasibility of the proposals and give life to a co-planning process, putting into practice our principles of shared administration and thus giving space to the protagonism of citizens in the neighbourhoods".

Among the most evocative proposals, the creation of a new square on via San Bernardo in Chiaravalle presented by a large number of active citizens, associations and realities of the village (Caritas Ambrosiana Chiaravalle, Terra Rinata, Terzo Paesaggio, Associazione Borgo di Chiaravalle, Arci Pessina , Hotel Borgo Nuovo, Art to Eat, Good Taste and many active citizens), the reorganization of Piazzale Bacone with the “Liberi passi” project (APS Non Riservato, Bocconiani, Bacone School Parents Association, Santa Caterina Parents Committee, WinWin Office) , which proposes a new space that directly connects the school to the public gardens of via Morgagni, the Ultrapiazza 2.0 intervention for Piazza Alfieri at Bovisa (Bovisa active with Repubblica del Design, Ghigos) which aims to complete the transformation begun during the Milan Design Week of 2018, the restyling of Piazza Minniti all'Isola (Systematica srl with CORE-lab, Politecnico di Milano, Wher - Freeda srl, FreeLuna - Futur3 srl), which involves the extension of the sidewalk and the creation of equipped areas, maintaining the function of the market. One of the two proposals received on via Lecco (also presented in this case by the Systematica srl team with CORE-lab, Politecnico di Milano, Wher - Freeda srl, FreeLuna - Futur3 srl) finally considers the pedestrianization of the stretch between via Castaldi and via Palazzi, with functions that concern daytime and evening users of the street.

Several ideas were presented by parents' associations, who would like to make their children's time out of school safer and more pleasant, as is happening today in via Venini/Spoleto. New configurations, in this sense, have been imagined, as well as for piazzale Bacone, for piazza Vigili del fuoco, via delle Margherite, piazza Sicilia, via Feltre and via Val Lagarina. There are also many proposals presented by groups made up of associations, organizations and traders who have teamed up with a common goal: to ask the Administration to bring new livability to the squares and streets in which their activities gravitate. So here are some candidates for redevelopment: via Paravicini at the corner with via Zuretti, the viale Monteceneri/viale Serra underpass, piazza Fabio Chiesa, via Lecco, piazzale Ferrara, piazzale Siena, and piazzetta Capuana.

Traders' associations have also given their contribution, proposing interventions for piazza Diaz, via Lecco, the Lorenteggio market, Prato Centenaro, via Farini.

Neighborhood associations and committees are also very active, from those of Isola which propose interventions on via Toce and piazza Minniti to Nolo Social District which would like to change its face at the corner of via Pontano, via Mosso and Viale Monza, passing through the Precotto and Gorla Tomorrow gathered with the aim of redesigning Piazza Piccoli Martiri.

Finally, the individual citizens, who have made their own efforts, promoting the redevelopment of, for example, piazza Golgi, piazzale Corvetto, piazza Aspromonte, largo Brasilia.

In District 9 the record for the number of interventions requested, with 11 proposals presented, followed by District 3 which totaled 10.

In January the proposals will be presented publicly at the Urban Center as part of an event promoted by the Administration.

Created in collaboration with Bloomberg Associates and with the support of the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) Global Designing Cities Initiative, the "Piazze Aperte" project follows the sustainability and urban regeneration objectives of Milan 2030: enhancing squares as places of aggregation at the center of neighborhoods, improve public space, expand pedestrian and usable areas and promote sustainable forms of mobility to benefit the environment and the quality of life in the city.
