Morando Palace. “Milan of the 60s”, on display the story of an unrepeatable decade in the life of our city

Milan, November 5 2019 – From tomorrow until 9 February 2020, Palazzo Morando|Costume Moda Immagine hosts the exhibition “Milano Anni '60” which traces the history of an unrepeatable decade which consecrated the Lombard capital as one of the world capitals of creativity capable of the role of moral and economic leadership of the country.
Promoted by the Municipality of Milan | Culture Historical Museums Directorate and curated by Stefano Galli, the exhibition is organized by MilanoinMostra in collaboration with the Historical Museums Directorate of the Municipality of Milan and the Milan Police Headquarters, with the patronage of the State Police and the Lombardy Region .

The exhibition presents photographs, posters, magazines, furnishings, design objects and much more, which will make the visitor relive the atmosphere of that extraordinary era in which Milan, driven by the economic boom, suddenly found itself experiencing an unstoppable cultural ferment , characterized by an unprecedented design strength and the desire to definitively leave the horrors of war behind.

The exhibition itinerary, divided into sections, opens with images of the new Milan, whose face changes thanks to the new buildings, such as the Pirellone, the Velasca Tower, the Municipal Technical Services Tower, the Management Centre, the Galfa Tower but also the birth of the peripheral districts, among which Quarto Oggiaro, Olmi, Gallaratese, Gratosoglio, Comasina stand out, the latter begun in 1953 and completed in 1960, the most important building intervention in those years in Italy with its 11.000 rooms and 83 palaces.

Photographs and magazines of the time document the economic boom, with the construction of the Milanese ring roads and the Milan-Piacenza section of the A1 motorway, infrastructures that brought about a faster circulation of goods with greater growth of companies; famous names in advertising graphics were called upon to rethink the brands of the new and renewed corporate realities, starting from the fundamental project by Franco Albini and Bob Noorda for the Milan Metro.

There are numerous objects that help to evoke the great season of design, with masters of the caliber of Bruno Munari, Marco Zanuso, Vico Magistretti, Enzo Mari, Achille Castiglioni, Sambonet, Joe Colombo, Gio Ponti. The story of the Milanese companies involved in this sensational season is told. Among all Brionvega, Cassina, Zanotta, Kartell, Tecno, Fontana Arte, Artemide, Flos, Arflex and Danese.
The world of culture, art galleries and cabaret also experienced a period of great renewal. And of course the music, in particular jazz, which found a home in numerous clubs scattered around the city, such as Taverna Mexico, where the best exponents of this genre performed.

Already at the end of the fifties, Milan also became a popular place to organize memorable concerts, such as those of Billie Holiday at the Smeraldo, the Beatles at the Vigorelli, the Rolling Stones at the Palalido, Jimi Hendrix at the Piper, but it was also the stage that saw artists such as Enzo Jannacci, Giorgio Gaber, Adriano Celentano, Patty Pravo established themselves.

The end of the 60s then marked the birth of protest, from student revolts in universities, resulting in the occupations of the State and Catholic universities, to pickets in factories and strikes.

The exhibition closes with the section dedicated to Piazza Fontana and the end of the dream, with photographs of the massacre and funerals, accompanied by documents and some objects related to this tragic event whose research and selection, in the archives of the State Police and alone, the Milan Police Headquarters collaborated.

“MILAN OF THE 60S” at Palazzo Morando | Costume Moda Immagine is the new exhibition event of a journey that began with “Milan between the two wars. Discovering the city of Navigli through the photographs of Arnaldo Chierichetti” (2013) and continued with “Milan, city of water” (2015) and “Milan, history of a rebirth. 1943-1953 from bombings to reconstruction” (2016), “Milan and the underworld” (2017) and “Milan and the Cinema” (2018).
A journey in stages through the history of a city, through its specificities, the social events, the many cultural and entrepreneurial initiatives that have radically changed its face.
