A journey through twentieth-century fashion told by clothes and accessories belonging to the Palazzo Morando collections. Free entry

Milan, September 16 2022 - The exhibition “Moments of fashion at Palazzo Morando” opens to the public tomorrow, Saturday 17 September. From the bust to the dungarees", an exhibition itinerary in seven stages which, through the Museum's clothes and accessories, selected from those exhibited only in the 80s or completely unpublished, recounts female emancipation from a singular point of view.

After the success of the “Settecento!” exhibition, which ended on May 29th, Palazzo Morando | Costume Moda Immagine reopens the doors of the rooms of the New Wing with a short journey through the numerous and radical transformations of twentieth-century fashion, thus enhancing the collection of the Municipality of Milan which currently includes over 6 thousand pieces of clothing and accessories from the XNUMXth to the XNUMXst century: a precious heritage not only for the Museum's research activity, but also for the planning of exhibitions on themes and with different approaches each time, and for the contribution, through loans, to the creation of prestigious fashion exhibitions in Italy and abroad.

The seven brief stages of the journey, curated by Enrica Morini, Margherita Rosina and Ilaria De Palma, begin at the beginning of the century with the bust, an item of clothing still considered fundamental, but whose elimination will be one of the first effects of female emancipation.

Passing through the flappers, casual young women of the 20s, the elegance of the 30s, the difficulties of the Second World War and the great tailoring of the 50s, the journey ends with the birth of Italian ready-to-wear in the 70s and dungarees chosen as a symbol of the youth fashions of the period.

Linking the journey through the history of fashion to the theme of the Museum's collections is a 1963 outfit by Mary Quant donated in 1981 by the English designer "to the soon-to-be-established fashion museum in Milan".

This exhibition, like all the previous ones, was not only an opportunity for the Institute to enrich its collections through the donation of new items and the constantly expanding online catalogue, but also a precious moment of interdisciplinary study on a part of his estate. Dealing with clothes - be they ancient or contemporary - means studying them in depth both from the point of view of fashion and its values, and from a material point of view: their preparation requires having to recreate the physicality for which they were made ( creating the display support or adapting the mannequin to the dress) and reproducing the substructures necessary to support and make legible the volumes that constitute its shape with the aim of highlighting the tailored cut of the garment and giving it the silhouette and styling of the moment of his creation.

The guide Fashion moments at Palazzo Morando. From the bust to the dungarees with photographs and detailed sheets of all the objects on display is available on the website http://www.costumemodaimage.mi.it/ together with the complete press kit.
