Palazzo Marino. Internal restoration for the Civic Temple of San Sebastiano, the procedure to entrust the work has begun

Milan, August 18 2021 – A conservative restoration intervention for the friezes and frescoes of the Civic Temple of San Sebastiano. The Municipality of Milan has started amarket survey aimed at operators capable of carrying out the recovery and restoration of the internal architectural surfaces of the church in via Torino 28.

This is the first important renovation project for the civic church; a second batch of internal restorations is being planned.

The Civic Temple of San Sebastiano can be considered unique in Milan for several aspects.

It is the only church in the city with a perfectly cylindrical domed shape, from the invention of the designer Pellegrino Tebaldi who perhaps, in imagining the building, was also influenced by the limited spaces available. And it is the only church owned by the municipal administration, hence the name Civico Tempio.

Its construction (or rather reconstruction, as the Church of San Sebastiano already stood in that place) was born as a fulfillment of the vote of 1576 to free the city from the plague.

The restoration and conservation interventions of the internal elements of the historical-monumental asset were decided by the Technical Area of the Municipality after careful investigation and observation work. Inside the church, in fact, there are painted plasters, gold leaf decorations and stained glass windows. The ribs of the domed vault host nineteenth-century frescoes.

In detail we will intervene to clean the surfaces, consolidate the materials to avoid detachment and deterioration, restore any material or pictorial deficiencies.

All the works have received the green light from the Superintendency.

Expressions of interest from companies will be collected until September 21st, then the procedures required by law will be followed to identify the operator to whom the task will be assigned.

The cost of the works is approximately 800 thousand euros and 360 days of work will be needed to complete them.
