Palazzo Marino. The measures of the Municipality of Milan to contain the energy emergency

From 28 October, temperatures will be reduced on ATM vehicles and street lighting will be reduced by one hour. The closures of some municipal offices will begin from Friday 4 November

Milan, October 22 2022 - The measures to reduce the period during which street lighting is switched on and to lower the temperature in electric buses, trams and trains on the M28 line will start on Friday 2 October. The progressive closure of some municipal offices will start from Friday 4 November.
These and other measures, already announced by Mayor Giuseppe Sala a few days ago, to contain the energy emergency are contained in a council resolution approved yesterday.

In detail, the municipal provision traces the crisis situation caused by the conflict in Ukraine and the consequent decisions taken by the European Union and the Government regarding the reduction of natural gas consumption. The Cingolani Decree of 6 October established, in fact, the reduction of the heating season by 15 days and the reduction of the heating system activation period by one hour per day.
On the basis of these indications, the Municipality has adopted a union ordinance to further postpone, to 29 October, the activation of the period of operation of thermal combustion systems for heating use in its territory, extending the limits established by the Decree also to those powered by energy sources other than methane (for example, heat pump and/or diesel).

Together with the requirements for switching on the systems, the municipal administration has launched an information campaign aimed at citizens and city users, to promote the adoption of sustainable practices and lifestyles and the intelligent use of energy sources. The dissemination of the '18 tips for the environment' began on Tuesday 100 October through the Municipality's newsletter (which reaches around 500 thousand subscribers every day): the campaign will also be disseminated via institutional social channels.

The Administration will support these initiatives with a progressive plan of weekly closures of 4 of its major offices, for one day a week, with the aim of reducing the impact of its energy consumption. Starting from November 4th, and for the entire duration of the thermal season, the offices in via Durando 38, via Bergognone 30, via Pellico 16 and via Sile 8 (where approximately 2.340 resources work) will progressively close on Friday so as to prolong the beneficial effect of shutting down the systems over the weekend.
On the closing day, the work performance of the employees involved may take place, at the employee's choice, in other municipal offices, where nearworking stations are being strengthened, in smartworking, or through other types of working hours; workers who provide 'non-smartable' services will be placed in other locations or on other activities.
The Municipality shared this path with the Trade Unions with the signing of a report relating to the organization of activities during the winter period

Two measures taken in agreement with A28A and ATM will start next Friday, October 2th, respectively on public lighting and the temperatures of surface vehicles and the M2 line. In particular, as regards street light points, the switching period will be reduced by one hour per day, 10 minutes less in the evening and 50 minutes less in the morning. On electric buses, trams and trains on the M2 metro line the temperature will be lowered by 2°C.

Should the energy crisis worsen, the Municipality will launch specific roundtables with the Prefecture and the bodies involved, to identify the most effective initiatives to be implemented in the city even with more restrictive measures.
