Navigli. Definitive pedestrianization of via Ascanio Sforza

The proposal presented to Municipality 5: permanent ZTL from 19pm to 6am. Activation starting this summer

Milan, 9 April 2021 - An updated proposal, capable of reconciling the needs expressed by citizens and commercial operators, for the evening establishment of a pedestrian area in via Ascanio Sforza, to be activated in permanent mode and with a camera starting from this summer. The proposal was presented by the Administration to Municipality 5 and to the DUC Navigli.

For several years the desire has been expressed by residents and commercial activities to pedestrianize the street to improve its liveability and integrate it more into the Darsena and Navigli system. The request was expressed more forcefully last summer, also in the context of land occupation concessions for the installation of outdoor areas and light tables. The Administration is working to activate a definitive solution that reconciles different needs for mobility, parking, residence and activity in an area, that of the Navigli, which is extremely delicate and solicited, and this is why they were some meetings have already been held to gather the opinions of the citizens of the neighborhood and of the DUC.

The new proposal provides for the establishment of a "strengthened" restricted traffic area, every day, from 19:00 to 6:00 in the morning, in via Ascanio Sforza, via Scoglio di Quarto, via Bettinelli, via Lagrange.

"This solution will make it possible to improve the liveability of the area, favoring pedestrian use, the natural vocation of the canal area - declare the councilors Marco Granelli (Mobility) and Pierfrancesco Maran (Urban Planning) -. Via Ascanio Sforza can be experienced in the evening hours with greater safety, commercial activities will be able to use the spaces and residents will still be able to pass through the restricted traffic zone and park in the side streets".

In detail, the ZTL and the parking ban in via Ascanio Sforza will concern the stretch between via Scoglio di Quarto and via Conchetta and provides for the establishment of a speed limit of 15 km/h. Via Scoglio di Quarto will become a restricted traffic zone in the stretch between Corso Manusardi and via Sforza, with a speed limit of 15 km/h, maintaining the one-way direction Ascanio Sforza. Via Bettinelli and Via Lagrange will become zone 15, the first maintaining two-way traffic, the second maintaining the current one-way direction Corso S. Gottardo, and in both the possibility of parking for residents will remain. Finally, via Pavia, in the short stretch between via Ascanio Sforza and the first turn back, will become a restricted traffic zone and a 15 km/h, two-way road.

The new ZTL involves the installation of two cameras, one in via Scoglio di Quarto, at the intersection with Corso Manusardi, the other in via Pavia, at the last turn back before the intersection with via Ascanio Sforza.

At the same time, a Zone 30 will be established throughout the neighborhood around Corso S. Gottardo, as required by the residents' social street. Zone 30 will be delimited by via Ascanio Sforza, viale Tibaldi (excluded), via Castelbarco (excluded), via Teuliè (excluding preferential tram lane), via Col di lana (excluded) and viale Gorizia.

The proposal was submitted to the Municipality 5 for the opinion, and to the DUC. The goal is to activate the new ZTL starting from summer 2021.
