Open Air Museum. Art and entertainment return to the Monumental Cemetery on Sunday 25 August

Last summer event to discover one of the places most loved by tourists and citizens
Milan, August 22 2019 - On Sunday 25 August, from 10am to 13pm, the usual summer appointment of free events bringing theatre, music, cinema and guided tours to the Monumental Cemetery is renewed.
The “Open-air Museum” exhibition is promoted by the Municipality of Milan and created by Fondazione Milano – Scuole Civiche present with graduates and students of the Claudio Abbado Civic School of Music, the Luchino Visconti Civic School of Cinema and the Paolo Grassi Civic School of Theater . Every last Sunday of the month, until October, it will be possible to discover and rediscover in an unusual way one of the city's art treasures and memories.
For the entire morning, a video created by the Luchino Visconti Civic School of Cinema will be shown in the conference room, entitled "Between contemporary music and jazz:  Conversation with Andrea Dulbecco", a documentary in which lessons-conversations on music are presented, in particular on what falls under the definition of "contemporary", with the aim of combining the multifaceted activity of a musician and his personal history with the reasoning on some fundamental aspects of the debate on contemporary music and jazz, Dulbecco's second great passion.
At 10, 10.30 and 11, three guided tours will leave from the external square, organized by volunteers from the Civil Service and employees of the Cemetery, which will allow the public to discover different aspects of the rich heritage of the Monumental.
The 10am itinerary offers a walk entitled "Author's quotes: journey through the sources", a short journey among the sources, among those "signs already developed" that were able to transform the Milanese cemetery into a sort of "Atlas of memory" called to safeguard what has been produced over millennia of civilization.
The 10.30 am walk, entitled "A museum among the trees", accompanies the discovery of the Monumental Cemetery from another point of view: this, in fact, is not only the largest open-air museum in Milan, but also a centuries-old park . The proposed route, which includes some of the most famous monuments, winds along tree-lined paths and is recommended for those who have never visited the Monumental.
In the 11am route, "Milan VS Inter" we will discover the main characters who contributed to making the two important Milan football teams, AC Milan and Inter, great. In the Famedio del Monumentale, in addition to the founders (Kiplin and Muggiani), there are some of the most famous footballers (Meazza, Lana Maldini and Ferrario), managers (Motta and Rizzoli) and sponsors (Pirelli).
Guided tours are free and can be booked at the gazebo starting from 9.30 am until the maximum number per group is reached.
In the lower western gallery [C], at 11 am, a theatrical short will be staged, written specifically and performed by graduates of the Paolo Grassi Civic Theater School. The protagonist of the short play is a famous character buried in the cemetery, who meets contemporary citizens through the ritual of the theatre. In “El pret de Ratanà” all the nevers and all run away! - direction and dramaturgy by Luca Rodella, with Giuseppe Palasciano and music by Roberto Dibitonto – Giuseppe Gervasini from the afterlife recommends alternative medicines not only to the living but also to souls in purgatory like him. In a sort of celestial exile as an uncomfortable figure even in heaven, he does not miss the opportunity to recite a liturgy with an almost pagan aftertaste, to celebrate the mysteries of nature and dream of the utopia of a universal harmony in which to heal from evils it will no longer be necessary.
The appointment in the upper western gallery [B-G] ends at 12 with the jazz concert “A modern quartet: GASP!”, featuring students and graduates of the Civic Jazz Courses of the Civica Scuola di Musica Claudio Abbado: Alessio Dal Checco ( sax), Samuele Bianchi (bass), Pietro Gregori (drums), Gioele Fumagalli (guitar). The quartet will perform unreleased pieces composed by the group and a repertoire of standards and songs by the most famous protagonists of jazz.
The “Monumental: Open Air Museum” exhibition will continue every last Sunday of the month until October, with a series of events that will once again see theatre, music, cinema and thematic walks narrating the Monumental Cemetery and its beauties: 29 September and October 27th from 10am to 18pm.
